My Local Men In Sheds has landed theses two Butterfly Lanterns. A Few questions. Are they worth spending time, funds and efforts on them? Lantern Number 1. This is the most complete. The internals. I know it will nee d, seals and a cup washer. Lantern Number 2. I am hearing mixed messages on theses. Move them on. Worth it. What is the general view? Any information on them is needed, if any one can help I would be very greatful.
I have seen (and owned) lanterns of a far worse build quality. As long as the founts do not leak they can be made to work very well even though they will never become show stoppers. These were made to provide light and that's what they do! I see they both have pre-heat trays so you don't have to worry about the torches. I don't like them anyway! Do get rid of the spider corpses, they smell bad when burned... I'd say, get the best parts from both lanterns to make one perfect one and use the rest for spares. If you can repair both, so much the better! As they are a straight copy of the Petromax lanterns it is easy to find all the info you need on this site, in case of trouble, just ask. Spare parts used to be available in Germany ( Stuga Cabana ), don't know the current situation nor availability in the UK but Petromax parts mostly fit to. Good luck!
Nothing wrong with them, they will be easily repaired, parts are interchangeable with similar lanterns. You will find what you are looking for on either the fettle box or dreaded eBay. Your lanterns will clean up well. Just remember that your lantern doesn’t have to be over polished to look cool, just wash and clean up then maybe a light polish. They will look very smart. 350+CP very bright
Well, one is working, we knew that only one was able to be rebuilt. We had many issues. First new part, the ceramic part. The female thread needing a bit of a fettle to get it to fit. Best old cup washer was on a bent rod, so it would unscrew itself as you used it, even with a new cup washer. Both super heaters had issues. Even after rebuilds they caused issues, leaking, not sealing and more. A hammer fixed one, then the second behaved. Neither control valves were set in the correct position for on/off. That repair showed that the fuel pipes were full of rubbish. So the tanks and all parts that handled fuel needed a good clean. So we did that. We fitted new mantles and went for a light. Bloody terrible. We had fuel leaks, new seals failing, dirty fuel then a bent vent screws. Then after another burn we hand the ceramic fail. We build again, then we had a good reason why we do it outside and with fire extinguishers. It blew up. I almost dropped my coffee. New brew, another rebuild, new mantles, new fuel and new coffee.
