Dears, I have to fix the 1950 Canadian Coleman 249 burner tube. The threading on one side is damaged. I am looking for a correct die to fix that thread. I am not an expert in tap and die subject and definitely totally green in those in not metric system. The external diameter of tube is approx. 14,3mm so close to 1/2”. Thread is pretty dense – approx. 25 threads per inch. Die descriptions/parameters differs a lot (UNC, unf, unef, pipe thread, not pipe thread etc.). so I am lost. I have found in Poland a tap and die set 1/2'' 28 threads per inch (unef) for approx. 40$ so not cheap at all and I am still not sure if that would be the correct set. I would be grateful to get info as to what exactly should I buy. All the best, Piotrek ps. Please be so kind and do not ask who and how damaged that tube
If you don’t find the right die you should consider to get a replacement tube from OCP Old Coleman Parts > Lanterns > Burner Tube - E1419 good luck with your search but I don’t know the thread size.
@Piotrek I have some NOS and used pieces of that Coleman tube, but I need to know what the length of the tube is to make sure I’ve got the correct piece (if you want me to supply it to you). What would be useful is: Total length (mm) Length of bottom thread (that fits the burner cap) Length of top thread (that fits the cast burner). Cheers Tony
Thank you. @Pancholoco1911 - it is good to know, but shipping to Poland is 20$ + VAT and + custom tax will make 30$ of shipping costs and no fun from "regular, boring shopping". @Tony Press - first I will try to find a die and have some fun with fettling, but I will bear in mind that I can count on your help - thank you. I even checked where the hell Tasmania is, and any connection from Poland (the well known center of the whole world ) to that land seems like an exotic adventure Before any transcontinental shipping, I will also have to check if any other parts are needed: I have to put back the needle and reassemble generator, silver solder pre-heater cup etc. Those springy wires from inside of the generator gave me a memorable lesson already while digging them out, cleaning and reshaping... So it gets personal with that cute little lamp, that I bought by stupid mistake based on unclear pictures, thinking that this is 242K model from Norway Dies are small and my wife does not know how many of them I have, so I will post some updates what fits and what not. all the best, Piotrek
@Piotrek If I'm not wrong, the threads on the Coleman 249 burner tube should measure 9/16" in diametre with 27 tpi thread pitch and 60° thread angle. That'd mean the size would be 9/16 - 27 UNS. (Unified Special Thread series). I can neither remember the length of the threads at both ends of the tube nor the length of the burner tube itself.
Thank you @MYN . 9/16 - 27 - fits my measurements the most, so it is ordered already. I will post the result
I have been to Poland once, in 2001, for a meeting. I stayed in Warsaw and didn’t get to see much outside of the city, but I enjoyed Warsaw very much. A person I went to school with moved to Poland many years ago (1980s), married a Polish woman, and I’ve not seen him since. Cheers Tony
@Tony Press - if you ever plan to visit Europe and Poland again, you can be my guest in Warsaw. This is official and there are plenty of witnesses here You would better buy some Petromax and Hasag lamps before in Poland. I can be a keeper and you can bring them back to Australia after the visit. That is what I do with friends in Norway from time to time - on the plane my baggage is full of lamps when I fly home after every holiday and the subject Coleman 249 was one of them By the way 1980s must have been an "interesting" period in Poland for your friend, because in 1981 a martial law was declared in Poland. Hopefully Polish wife was a decent reward for such a trip: BBC News | Sunday 13 December 1981 (youtube.com)
