Hi guys, Like the title say because my LED lanterns keep getting bugs all over it. Please share me your experience… Regards, Eleazar
Welcome to join the classic pressure lamp .You just need to replace the LED lamp with a Pressure lamp, you’ll get lots of bugs’ corpses during your night.
Yes if they get in there, in Australia we have witthitty grim/ moths they grow to about 3-4 inches in size , if they get in your mantle won’t stand a chance. The lamps attract bugs a of all sorts, there will be a feast of bugs for the birds the next day
We’re getting one for sure but we’re still on the hunt for a decent 991. We’re just concern how much bugs we’re going to attract while using it at the camp site. Our LED lantern literally inviting tons of bugs for party and it’s hard to enjoy our time. Thank you guys for advice, Eleazar
Maybe you should ask on CCS ?? I am sure I have seen threads where folks said they use more than one lantern and use amber shades that attract the insects? good luck with the hunt
"Roasted bugs" you mean :-) Best bug annihilator is my Aida 214 with the mica chimney. Bugs just love to kill themselves there. Erik
I think the 991 would be fine. It will attract insects, but the hood and globe cage setup means that the insects cannot fly directly at the mantle and will be deterred or roasted before damaging the mantle. Australia is the nightime insect centre of the worls and I use regularly pressure lanterns outside and when camping. Best regards Tony
Forgive me if this is a noob question but does the pressure lamp flame show an intense amber color already? If I’m putting an amber globe that means I would double down the amber.
@Eleazar No, it's more closer to the sun at 3-4pm in the summer. It's very white. The amber globe also cuts the wave frequency of light that attracts insects. As a side effect, the light passing through becomes amber. It won't make it any more amber, it doesn't delete the amber frequency already produced.
That make sense I will take your advice once I get my hands on the lamp. By the way, the level of your explanation sounds to me like you’ve been through a lot of experiences. When I was in Seattle I didn’t have any issues with bugs.
As podbros said, I find it advantageous to operate an amber globe lantern or two at my table and cooking place while running a clear globe lantern or two, at some distance from my camp. Many of the bugs preferentially find their way to the whiter light and leave my table comparatively bug free.
Get an electric UV light source to attract most of the bugs to it. Place it not too far away from where the gathering activity is. Insects are most attracted to UV, blue/white lights. This way, your desired lantern won't draw in so much insects.
I already got a UV zapper on Amazon it works to a certain degree just like many of you have mention, however still many of the bugs gets to the LED lights and I often wonder if it’s going to make any changes if it’s next to a pressure lantern.
@Eleazar I find that lanterns attract insects worse due to how clean and natural the light is. I still suggest sourcing an amber globe for your lantern.
@MYN I've heard success with people adding citronella in kerosene lanterns but I'd be wary of adding any additives outside what these lanterns recommend.
Yes, @Dashwood, Adding citronella oil into the fuel would help repel the insects but might foul up the lantern's generator/jet sooner. A red or amber globe would filter out the portion of light with shorter wavelenghts(the greens, blues or white). It would certainly reduce insect attraction but at the expense of the desired white light.
Why the amber globe is not easy to find? I was under impression that globe in different colors are available anywhere on the internet but I was wrong.
@Eleazar It wasn't a popular item and many who offered discontinued selling. It's seen as a collector item now.
@Eleazar There is a seller of reproduction globes in Thailand who sells on the Bay of Evil, and produces amber globes. Tony
Thank you I’ll check em out! I saw a brass lamp with amber globe and I was amazed that they look good together. I’m starting to wonder nickel might not be good with amber globe.
