I was given an anchor 950 yesterday that has been sat in a garage for many years and I am trying to work out how best to service it and replace seals, my only experience with lamps is restoring and servicing the three Tilley 246 I have so a bit lost at the moment with the anchor, can anyone point me in the right direction? i don’t think the lamp has been much used but the pump does not work and it looks like the plunger has gone hard with standing. Beyond that I have yet to go any further as I didn’t want to just take it to bits without some idea what I am doing. I’m in the UK so any recommendations for where to get seals etc, can you get rebuild kits as you do with Tilley?, would be appreciated.
First thing is, the Anchor is basically a close copy of a Petromax. They are, or were made to a budget so the quality can vary widely but in essence they are Chinese workhorses and work very well. Parts are still widely available on the internet but my honest advice would be take things one section at a time (military style) and concentrate on that before moving to the next part. I would not strip the entire lamp down to component parts in one go. So, start with the pump, get new leathers and check that the nrv is working, but remember, this type of pressure lantern is not like a Tilley or a Bialaddin so be careful not to confuse them. Thanks for all the help and advice. I bought a few bits from Mike at base camp, with a new pump washer it pumped perfectly, and using the meths dish it lit fine. now I know it works I can get on with trying to clean up and so something with all the old pitted chrome.
