Just a wee update after my 1st haul of lamps (when I only went to look for one). Washed and mantle fitted but will need new washers (ordered from Fettle Box) as pulsating when lit. Seems to be all original and the base, no picture, is black paint. There's no vote yet if it's getting to stay on the dinning table
Hi Matt. Literaly.....Scotland. Kind of near to Perth. I didn't know it was a tilley shade. I tried it in the bottom of the gallery where the onion globe goes. It didn't fit so I didn't bother taking it. I had bought the lamps and he offered to throw it in. A very nice chap (Shedman) explained that I may have been a little careless so I went back for it today. The chap might have a few more (not ducks!) and he has heaps of paraffin lamp globes and loxon mantles etc. Cheers Brian Fingers crossed!
Hello Brian, if it's pulsating then there is most likely a problem with the vapouriser or the burner or both. Or the fuel feed tube may need to be wired to clear any build up of muck. Fine shade!
Cheers Jeff. Have another burner on my PL53 which I will try and see if that makes any difference. If it's the burner is it a heat and quench routine? Which bit wears in the burner? Thanks
Hello Brian, once a Tilley burner is worn, it will not work well and a new burner is required. I tend to buy X-246B lanterns to strip for parts, but only if they are cheap. I also strip worn burners for parts. If a burner is soaked in vinegar for a few days, that softens all of the carbon etc., and the dome will usually unscrew. As will the mixing tube and the air pipes and sometimes the spigot, so the only part which is scrapped is the burner body.
Hi Jeff, so the top dome, 3 inlet legs, bottom bit where the mantle goes on are saveable? The bit with the circular row of holes is the worn bit? hope I've got that right. Many thanks
The ring of holes in the burner can become enlarged & upset the natural order of things & the inside of the spigot that the vap tube slips onto can become worn too which stops the heat conducting to the vap to vapourise the fuel properly & if you can unscrew the mixing dome on top to check the inside & make sure that the inside parts are not blocked or loose Stu
Brian, Well done I just knew that you had missed the best part when you told me about the shade Now go back and get the other shades, even if they are just opaque glass ones. If they fit, snap them up. Well done mate. Your Tilley spirit jar will be on its way to you tomorrow. I wish I could have been there when you found the old shop because that is the exiting bit about lamps and stoves; you never know what is waiting in the next stop. Great finds Steve.
Hello Brian, the top of the burner is called the mixing dome and inside of that is the mixing tube, those parts and the 3 air pipes and nuts are well worth saving. The spigot can be saved somtimes, but it can be to far gone. Having said all of that, try wireing the fuel feed tube on your lamp, it's located at the bottom of the socket for the control cock, I use tying wire for that task. Shove the wire until it touches the bottom of the tank and do that a few times, then put a little fuel in the tank and shake rattle and roll the tank. Then pour out the paraffin into a container and check to see if it's mucky, if it is, then repeat the action above until the fuel comes out clean. You won't be wasting fuel, just leave it in the container for a few days until the muck has settled to the bottom of the container, then pour it through a funnel which has a filter into a clean container. Also, try the burner which is on your lamp with a vapouriser which you know is in good working order. In most cases, it's old well used vapourisers which cause the pulsating.
