my optimus 930 seems to light up ok, but about every 7 seconds seems to eject flames from the burner/mantle. just wondering if this could be a problem with the jet? has anyone else had this problem? The jet does seem to emit smoke as well.
In my opinion, the fuel is not vapourising properly, the vapouriser may be partly blocked with carbon or the mantle is not bulbous enough to keep the vapouriser at the proper working temperature or it could be both of those known problems. I use bulbous mantles rather than the sock type of mantle as the bulbous mantles form closer to the vapouriser and therefor keep it hotter.
This might be a phenomenon called "surging", "pulsing", or "hunting", although very slow at your lantern. If you type in the words I mentioned here in the searchbar you will find various threads and posts addressing this phenomenon.
I did try it with a tilley mantle and tied the thinner end. Can you recommend a better type/ brand of mantle to use for this lamp?
I used anchor 500 mantles on both of my 930s and they work very well, the anchor mantles shrink too small for the large petromax type lamps but in my opinion are the perfect size for the small optimus. Regards Ian
I agree with @JEFF JOHNSON remarks. With my experience I've found also that over pressure is another issue for flaming. I currently use 8 to 10 strokes then 3 strokes on the pump every 45 minutes. Hope this helps.
