Here are my numbers 12 & 13. I have remanufactured a lid and chain for the 12, new handle and hook for the 13 using the correct size and grade piano wire, new brass gauzes for both and have decarbonised both. I am currently waiting for the correct gauge piano wire to make a new pricker for the 12. I would really like to buy more of these lamps and have tried to add a wanted advertisement to the forum but apparently “do not have enough privileges “?. If anyone does have one they would part with or knows of one, please give me a shout.
How very cool, @edgecutler, I’ve not. Seen anything like it. Are they gravity feed and what fuel is used, do you have any more details on them
Looks great, also the water feature, gargoyle. Home made too? The advertisement part of the forum is only open after you made some posts. So tell us more about these flares and you may post there too.
Glad you like them. Myself, my Sister and Brother inlaw and my Dad before us have been collecting Wells lamps for many years. The flare lamps themselves interest me the most. They are paraffin fuelled and yes, gravity fed. Many flare lamps prior to these were Naptha fuelled which of course is a very volatile fuel which came with greater danger. Wells marketed these around the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, I'll dig out an advert I have and add it to this thread soon, (although I believe it has already been added to the forum elsewhere). One of A C Wells pushing points was the fact that these lamps are safer than their Naptha fuelled predecessors and indeed "safety from explosion" is cast into the the tank/font.
The Gargoyle is a hand carving in Bath stone by Steve Bloomfield, he and his brother do many of the carving repairs and replacements on Churches and Cathedrals in the South of England. This small one is a piece that he carved in some downtime, he offered it to me when I visited his workshop one day and so I built a water feature in my garden to "bring it to life".
@adgecutler Its not often we see these paraffin flares, and a couple made by Wells, i would love to see one of there industrial wells lights the were famous for
Hello Jim, I wanted to inform @adgecutler of your post. By putting the "@" in front of someones name they get a message (alert if you want) that someone wants to tell them something. I myself like the Wells lamps but I collect far to many things as it is now. Trying to scale down a bit, not easy! ( @Jim Morton )-> this should send an alert to your mailbox if all is well!
