I recently purchased a Vapalux lamp for restoration from an online auction site. It requires a little bit of work, but that's why I buy them. However on removing the pump I found that the leather washer is held on the shaft by a threaded screw and nut assembly which are held in place by a standard retaining nut.

I wondered if anyone had come across this arrangement before IMG_5648.JPG IMG_5656.JPG IMG_5660.JPG IMG_5661.JPG IMG_5662.JPG or whether it was just a local modification to keep the original lamp in working order?

There are similar arrangements on many other lanterns, such as Hasag and Phoebus that I've come across.
The pump rod seems to be machined originally, and I don't thing that such an effort was made by someone DIY who just kept in working order. However, I'm not an expert for British lanterns...

It is different from the original, which is made of brass and doesn’t have the ‘floating’ type of washer arrangement; but should work fine with a new leather cup of the right size?
Looks like a Bialaddin 300x

Many thanks for your comments. It seems to be a bit of a mix, although there is a Vapalux marked jet cleaner, which is one of the reasons I thought the pump might have been modified by a former owner. It's almost as if the pump leather comprised of flat washers rather than a standard cup type, also there was no spring on the pump shaft.

No worries, I'll make it work somehow.

    Hi
The jet cleaner is an original bialaddin one ,what looks like a v is actually an arrow to show whether the cleaning needle is in an up or down position .
