1915-1920 Economy table lamp

Hi all.

Here's my restoration of an Economy Lamp Co. lamp from around 1915 - 1920. No markings on the lamp, but this torch lit burner is one type used for Economy lamps and lanterns. The burner casting is very special with an intriguing pattern, and is equipped with a vertical cleaning needle control. This burner is present in a Economy lantern patent from 1915 and is also present on the Economy Model 22 lamp 1919 - 1921. I believe this lamp with a font also used on an early Sun Gas Lamp Co. lamp in my collection, pre dates the model 22 lamp so probably made around 1915 - 1920.

The lamp came with most nickel plating gone; was missing the cleaning needle control wheel and the heat smoke bell. I decided to try the lamp without a generator restore and it was pretty easy to get the lamp going. Needs a lot of pre heating though.

I'm glad I can add this scarce lamp to my American old timer collection.

Hi Conny,

As always.....awesome. The burner set-up it quite strange, how would the fuel/air mixture flow, might be quite simple, but I'm quite confused by the slanted and horisontal cross on it?

I appreciate this post very much. I bought this burner in a lantern recently. Now I want a table lamp to practice on before I tear into the lantern. Thank you!

 

This Economy table lamp is model A in the PLC. I don't know when they were made but by 1919 the same burner was mounted on a flatter topped tank so it will pre date that and the burner pre dates the patent for the first lantern in 1914 so I would guess at about 1909 to 1916. ::Neil::

Is the lamp shade on this lamp original to the lamp? If it’s not, do you know who made that lamp shade?

@Tony Press Tony, This lamp is not shown in any catalogue or ad I know of,
so not sure what would have been an original shade. The Economy 22 lamp shows a
dome shade, so I thought it would also be good for this lamp configuration.
This shade is know as a "Rayo" wick lamp shade and also used on Coleman lamps as the nr 306 shade.

as well have an econamy model 22 just had a wasps nest or something in the neck ofhe burner otherwise lit right up after tourching it
