I've just seen another Tilley lamp for sale, and this one is new old stock, though all of the seals have been replaced.
I'm very tempted, and don't know how long I can resist the temptation...

When there is one somehow they grow to 2 the 3, and before you know it, a whole family of lamps suddenly appear.:D/

@Henry Plews, the leather pump washer just failed tonight, and I had a devil's own job getting it out, I do have a new set of seals on order, but the only oil I have in the house is olive oil, will this do in a pinch, or am I better off getting some 3 in 1.? :-k

Mmm, olive oil will do at a pinch but personally I'd go for 3-in-one. You should be able to get a 100mm bottle for just over a fiver. It's a multi purpose oil which has many uses around the home - lubricating door locks and hinges, sewing machines, bicycles, etc.

@Henry Plews I got the new set of seals today, but how long should I let the leather cup soak for before using it.? :-k
Also how often should I inspect the pump for signs that it needs attention, and what should I be watching out for.?

Depends on who you got the seals from.. some of the pump cups aren’t oiled so need gentle soaking and massaging

Fettlebox ones are pretty much ready to go, with maybe a drop in the pump tube to help

I bought mine from Tilley Lamps and Stoves and it isn't soaked, would it be a good idea to lay in some spares.?

Spares are always useful to have
some are better quality than others

you can make your own but that’s another rabbit hole :)

the right tools are useful as well  .. this is for the near future when you are at your most unsuspecting and vulnerable..you see a lamp that calls to you.. of course you can’t leave it there so when you get it home you have to remove all the old seals and that’s when the fun really starts

I'd let it soak overnight and massage it in as suggested by @podbros and let any surplus drain off before using it. It doesn't need to be dripping, just supple enough to spread out and make a seal against the sides of the pump tube so that the air is forced through the pump valve and into the tank.
Maintenance intervals vary, it can depend on how often (or infrequently) the lantern is used but basically if works leave it alone but if it takes a ridiculous amount of pumping - even with a full tank of fuel - to build up any significant pressure, there's a good chance the leather needs oiling again.

I used olive oil from Lidl for years without any problem at all. Essentially the only oil to avoid is boiled linseed oil which is OK for cricket bats but not much else and certainly not pump leathers.

The best oil to use is Neatsfoot oil which you can get from saddlers for dressing leather horse tack - saddles and harnesses etc. I got a 500ml can of that for about £6 from an old-fashioned cobbler in Chester-le-Street and I've used nothing else since then. I reckon 500ml is several lifetime's supply for a lamp collector.

As someone said, Fettlebox seals are excellent and I wouldn't use any other now. Generally, I just drop them in the neatsfoot oil for a minute or so and then use my fingers to work the oil into the leather. Then they're ready to go in the lamp. There's a link at the top right of the page, third box down.

I'd rather poke pins in my eyes than buy anything from Tilley. My experience of them is you'll get the lowest quality for the highest price...
