Hi All, Doing a bit of Research into the Aussie / Canuk 242 B and 249. Have come up with a date of 1949 / 50 as a reliable time frame for the Manufacture of the Aussie Coleman's. 1949 is the negotiation stages with Coleman Canada so presumably Late 1950 you would expect Lanterns to be appearing. Any Aussie Colemans out there dated before 1950? Import Restrictions due to the devaluing of the Australian Currency seems to be the reason why Coleman Canada sourced a local Company to Manufacture. Looking for the start and finish of production. A few dates at this stage, 1950 [ Start ] 1960 [ Finish ] It should be pointed out that I am looking for dates outside this range. 1950 appears to be fixed but looking for anything 1960 on. This post is also on CCF and BBLater. Colin
I've often wondered about this myself. I havn't got any years outside this range. The latest I have seen was a 242B from 10 60 and the earliest a 249 from 2 51.
Hi Dan, Originally found the Colton, Palmer & Preston info whilst looking for something else. Hence the original post. After 2 days of searching found your link. It's interesting that I can find no other ties between CP&P and Coleman Canada or mention of manufacture of Coleman's. In 1949 the Coleman Canada export manager was out here to access the viability of sales locally as the import restrictions hit them pretty hard in the sales Dept. The Aussie Coleman's went from 1950 - 1960 plus or so we believe. Evidence seems to suggest this but in 1954 CP&P sold their Southwark Factory to a Pharmaceutical Company. So there goes their capability to manufacture kerosene products. There has been no reference so far to any other Factories or 3rd party manufacturing. I am tending towards that CP&P and Coleman Canada with a bit skepticism but at this stage not ignored. In the years after the tie CP&P went through some record profit periods, each year surpassing the previous, so they found something that was a good money spinner. Unfortunately there is no mentions to what it was. One thing I know for sure is that there are / was a lot of Aussie Coleman's out there that would account for the profits. At the moment heading of at a tangent to think out side the box. Colin
I bought a Canadian 242K from Australia, dated in the 1930's. A friend of mine did the same. these seem slightly different than the 242K's seen on various websites. They may have been transitional, later becoming the 247 Scout. There was the 242K 'baby' as well as the 242K ''Scout'', there was the round pricker wheel and the lever, there was the lighting door and then no lighting door. All seemed to have the cast aluminum spirit cup. Recently someone on ebay purchased a 242K Scout with the original box. I'd be interested in knowing how this all transpired. Regards Dan MacPherson
