They certainly all look like part of the furniture and of excellent quality. Congratulations on your work.
Wow. Wonderful job you've done there. It's nice to finally see these lamps as they actually were supposed to look like! For once they really look fairly good when not just pictured naked and un-complete with only the bare onion globe we usually see here.
Phil, Your shades are truly beautiful and artistic and with perfect proportions. Nice photography too! Perhaps you could share some material and construction details. And welcome to the forum. Dan
Thank you all. I'll take more photos later and share the techniques of making the shade from material or modifying a normal shade into a Tilley one. -Phil Hsieh
Here shows an example of how I make a Tilley shade. 1. First, I draw a figure that shows the dimension of the iron frame. I sent it to a company which supports customizing lamp shades. 2. Then I received the frame and some materials. I also bought some other stuff from internet, which can make the shade look different. 3. Finally I assemble it and that's what you see.
There's gotta be a company in the UK that does this sort of thing. Probably they out-source to China, I should imagine...
This shade is a repro of the one in the 1932's shade catalogue. Here is how it looks with a ML96 and a ML98-like
Hi I'm in USA. How can I order the materialize will need to make one like the one on the Jacobean. Can you help me with that. Please?
Don't know if they are still in business but someone associated with the Lamp Emporium in St Stephen St. Stockwell, Edinburgh used to make some decent shades for Tilleys. If anyone is living in or near Edinburgh it might be worth checking out to see if they're still there. Only problem was Jock(?) Purves only used to open on a Saturday morning. He is expensive though but an interesting range of lamps.
@ych63 Fantastic and inspirational help from an old thread looks like it was supplied in a kit form with glue which is more appealing to me than trying to sew everything together not sure if Jock Purves is still around either sadly regards pb
Died a few years ago pb and I believe it was his collection that sold in auction in Perth last year. So I was told anyway. I never managed to find his shop and believe his widow opened up on a Saturday for a time.
Thanks Jean I have made inquiries about fire resistant material for lamps ; there are things available but types of materials and sizes may not be the best.. inquiries are still ongoing
I also looked for fire resistant material for pressure lamp shades but couldn't be sure exactly how fireproof they really were!
I have found some that are promising with good fire resistance The snags are ; they dont have any colour as they are mainly for the colour to be printed on so are a bit bland the other thing is getting the material in a big enough size to make it out of (thinking of a Tilley princess shade size) they would be big enough for the type of shade that is shown at the start of this thread but they are glued but it’s a start
I was getting excited till I got near the end and realized this was a old post, I would love to have one of thoses shades for my ML lamp!
Sorry about that Dean :-) it did look promising but there is still some inspiration there ? the measurements are good to have and look ‘right’ or near enough imo ive been thinking about metal frames for a while since i came across a couple of these frames which at first looked promising? tried it on a table lamp.. too small for a Tilley gallery though unless used for display .. can imagine the heat discolouration/singeing with the material so close to the gallery hmm Proportions look better on a smaller lamp but not ideal for a user unless a wider top ring added..
