Hi can anyone help, i've tried the strip the original gold coating from tilley lamps but i'm struggling to find something that removes it successfully. I've tried all sorts from brake fluid to nitromors and nothing affects it i would be grateful for any suggestions kind regards PP
@Paraffin Paddy Hi Paddy, Several options.. Try the nitromors again but sit the tank in a carrier bag (on old newspaper) or wrap in clingfilm as this helps to keep the chemicals from evaporating.. leave for a morning or longer and clean off, it might need another go Other folks use really hot water possibly boiling but gloves needed with both methods etc I actually use the Wickes brand of paint stripper which does the job.. sometimes coming back to it after an hr or two and adding fresh stripper can help.. and using an old toothbrush to agitate... very messy but water soluble (mostly) good luck with it
Very hot water made the gold paint on one of mine go very soft and easy to remove. It was an accidental discovery and I have not repeated it
'Restricted to Industrial Use' So long as you take the proper precautions and are responsible about disposal, what's wrong with members of the public, like us, using it.? I've read a lot of stories about commercial firms being fined for not disposing of waste correctly.!
Another good one in the UK is Starchem synstrip. Same caveats. Only available in 5L containers so unless you have lots to do maybe not so economical.
Here is the effect of the Wickes on a x246b base after only 15 mins Wrapping in plastic to keep the air out really helps.. bin bag in this case cheers p
The Starchem synstrip paint remover is about 90% Dichloromethane. Quite unhealthy stuff but should work well. Erik.
Here is the same Wickes paint and varnish stripper on a Vapalux tank you don’t need much, cover it with the newspaper so it sticks to it, then cover with the old binbag + leave for a half hr or so while you get on with something else.. the paint that is on the tank just wipes off now had this ages so good shelf life pb
