I now have my Tilley Lamp up and running, and here he is, normally it's me that names things, but this time it was Ria, my wife that suggested Ted as a name...

How long? Hmm, if Ted goes camping you might need a few

    :-)

    No danger of that.! [-X
We like our home comforts too much.! :D/
Ted is going to see most of his use in the bathroom, when we have a soak in the bath once a week.
I was wondering if I'd got the mantle right... :-k

A bright (ish) lantern in the bathroom!?
That will not be very cozy, and nothing I would use it for.
Lanterns are normally way too bright and rarely use any diffusing shade/globe to make them suitable for indoor use other than for working stuff.
You really should consider getting a table lamp with a proper shade instead.
As a bonus, it will give you another lamp to look for

It'll give a good light to read by, we currently use a Chalywn Pilot lantern, but that can be a bit puny... :-k

That's the way it came, so I can't take the credit for the work.

I've had two reasonably long burns of the lantern and got about 8½ hours running time from what was in the tank, which was about three quarters full, so not too bad. :D/

I've had my second Tilley lamp running today, sitting by the bath to give us some light to read by as we had our soaks.8]
Both Ria and myself think that the light that Bill, as I've called him is wonderful. :D/

Now you need to treat yourself and get a Bialaddin or Vapalux lantern and find out what proper engineering is... :D/

I got the seal changed, but now he's not burning very bright, so we'll replace the mantle once he's cooled down.

If it was burning O.K. before you changed the seal, I doubt it's the mantle that's at fault. Have you tried using the cleaning needle?

Turn the black knob of the control cock clockwise and back again. As well as shutting off the fuel it also raises the cleaning needle which will poke any obstruction / restriction out of the end of the vapouriser. If you do it quickly enough, the lamp will re-ignite itself.

    @Sammi Jane
As you are a subscriber its well worth you having a look at the Reference Library Tilley section as there is a lot of great stuff to familiarise with in there

it’s great that you are using your lamps regularly as that helps to get to know any foibles that they might have and how to deal with them if they crop up

    regards
