    Hi Guys

We were cleaning out some old stuff from our house and I came across a Tiley X246B. Stamp on the bottom reads 1277

I opened it up out of curiosity and the mantle(?) (white netting) disinteraged to dust. I was wondering if it contains asbestos?

Some research said that older models can contain Asbestos but not knowing much about the lamps I am unsure about what parts might contain it.

    Any help/advice appreciated.

    Cheers

    Hi Sam and Welcome!

there may be a small amount present in the string but the dust and remnants from a mantle is best disposed of by wearing a simple mask such as a covid type and over a bin bag carefully drop everything in, wiping any dust.. you can wash parts with dust on in a suitable sink or outside tap with a bit of washing liquid etc.. wash your hands carefully
    job done
    regards
    pb

edit : the lighting torch may contain asbestos.. this may only be a problem if disturbed.. some members use them as is and some prefer to replace taking precautions as above

edit x 2 : there may be a steel ring holding the top part of the mantle.. this can be prised off with fingers or a small screwdriver

    Hi,

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply.

So most of mantle disintegrated in room I was clearing out. Most of it fell into the box I found it in.

So there is some concerns that the mantle was manufactured with Asbestos? Just trying to gauge how much care I need to put into cleaning out the room where I found it.

The whole thing is outside now.

To be honest I would rather not deal with it at all. Perhaps this is a good forum for it to find a new home. Would gladly give it away for the price of posting.

    Hi
tbh the asbestos risk is very low with these lamps.. if most of it is in the box you will be fine

If you are not happy then pop it in a bin bag, tie a knot in the top and it can then be stored safely
if you are happy for it to be rehomed then im sure members near you will get in touch hopefully in the near future

    cheers

Picked up the lamp from Sam, earlier today and it's in our kitchen waiting to be fettled.! :D/

I've just taken the first steps to doing that and removed the pump, unbelievably there was still pressure in the tank and about three quarters of a pint of very stale paraffin.! :a
I'll have to give my local garage a call to see if they can dispose of it for me. :-k

I've found that the oily 'tuff is still viable, and I'm using it in one of my Chalwyn wick lanterns.

We need to stop the asbestos paranoia. Without knowing it, you have been living in a world saturated with asbestos, the famous Everit blankets, 100% asbestos!!! So it's not a few milligrams that will kill us!!! Look at Canada, there is a hecatomb of asbestos deaths??? Let's be serious and regain our senses and ability to think.

I'm not paranoid about it in the slightest, the ironing board we have is full of the stuff, admittedly it doesn't get much use these days...

What I am worried about is the council has to do any repairs to the down stack as that does have asbestos in it, and they'll want to rip it out to replace it with summat safe, and the upheaval will be huge.! :rage:
    Leave it well alone!

Sam has now been fettled, and once he has cooled down after a very successful test burn I will fit a new mantle and get him litted properly. :D/

There's been a slight hiccup, the seal between the control cock and the fount isn't seated properly so that will need some attention before I try the lighting again.! :(

Every car in the past had brake shoes, lines made with asbesto and everybody in the cities breath dust coming from cars stoping. Of course, we have to take the maximum care of our lungs but our peace of mind is important too.
