A combination of the modest output of a Campingaz GT and adjusted camera exposure to get the effect. Although I’ve a few of the now obsolete gas cartridges left, here I’m about to refill the one already installed, using the adaptors in the foreground (part a commercial product and part fabricated by me). Refilling is done by removing the lamp’s jet nipple and screwing in the adaptor in its place. To avoid having to replace the mantle each time the mantle support is carefully removed and ‘parked’ somewhere convenient (a roll of lead solder) to be replaced after refilling is done. It is of course essential that the lamp’s rubber seals are in good condition - no cracks, no perishing and having maintained their flexibility. John
Those tanks of sealed fuel are rare like chicken lips here. I passed on a lot of those types of stoves and lanterns not knowing there was a way to fill them again. They cant give them away here.
I have a GT lamp, but the washer is broken, maybe because of rust. I'm looking for a replacement, any ideas? I found this on the internet, but they are sold in industrial quantities. Presscall, you are a true inspiration to us all.
@chiorpo Search for ‘star lock washers’ on Amazon or other online sources and you’ll find a box of assorted sizes quite cheaply. Thanks for the compliment by the way!
I'm going to a local auto parts store tomorrow, I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the pics, but the washers are for holding nuts, the one in the lamp is for tightening and holding a 12mm axle. I think the "magic word" for the search is "6797J".
Well, yes, but one that would get a grip on the component would have served. Still, you’ve found a match, well done.
This morning I went to the parts store I mentioned, they looked at me like I was a green Martian with a trumpet nose.
Oh they did, did they? @chiorpo there’s a very helpful place not far from here that i have purchased star lock washers from and if you would like me to post you one I can ask them if they have any 12mm in stock? regards pb
Thanks @podbros, I ordered a set of stainless steel "starwash" washers. Although they are not exactly the same as the one that broke, I will see if they work when they arrive. These days I saw the price of a GT106 cartridge, maybe it is much better to refill as @presscall does.
@chiorpo , finding a full GT106 cartridge is a lucky strike these days as they are out of production for many years now. So yes, refilling them using these cheap Chinese cartridges is a good idea. I think they were only used in the Globe Trotter stove and a similarly sized lantern. The very first Campingaz stoves with disposable cartridges used an even smaller one. Almost as rare as hen's teeth nowadays and worth their weight in gold
The starwash arrived, a solution to the problem, but not the most satisfactory. On the right a Lampe GT with the original washer. In comparison they have a diameter too large and bend the operating lever in part. But the lamp works. When I find the exact spare part I will do the replacement. Following the advice of @presscall I too can refill the cartridge inserted in the lamp, even though I have a good supply of spare cartridges. @Wim , Campingaz has stopped producing both large (C400) small (GT106) and valved (CV360) cartridges. The latter for me were absolutely the best, built in aluminum, with an absorbent material inside, light and, if you want, also easily refillable. But that's another chapter, we could talk about it for years.
@chiorpo , The C400 is no problem, one can replace them with 2 190gr cartridges as I did in a lantern. I am lucky to have some GT106 and CV360 cartridges left, I feel rich now!
