24(x) are my preferred 242 lanterns are for Coleman fuel and and very wheel built. 249 is kerosene fuel and puts lot of light and heat, the 247 is like a modern 201 but well built. 236 and 237 are identical to 242s and 249’s but in a taller size and they put more candle power these are my favorite lanterns from Coleman
I have a Coleman 339 lantern which uses paraffin/kerosene and it works well, it's a fine size too. 1973 Coleman 339 lantern.
Kerosene makes the most sense to me as I plan on using them on a boat and will have kerosene and diesel readily available. I do tend to like older lamps as I am rather nostalgic.
Can't help you with this I'm afraid I'm a Tilley girl when it comes to pressure lamps, and for a boat I'd favour the X246B lanterns.
I've only got two Coleman's, a 220J and a 228J, both twin mantles, the diference is that the 228J has a bigger 'hat'. Both run on CF, howver I'm using fast acting panel wipe, and both run lovely on it. Both very bright, easy to light, quiet too, giving off good light. Hope this helps. Tim
No disrespect to Tilley or other European brands but almost all of them don’t have a positive shut off valve like Coleman and check valve in the pump (NRV for you guys) if you leave them pressurized they will leak or the NRV will fail with the time, a Coleman check valve will hardly fail in a lifetime and they are ash to service no need to replace pip or other parts when used correctly. I own a lot of European kerosene lanterns myself and a proud owner here. A 247, 249, 237, 639 are easy to find and you can keep them pressurized and none will leak. Other kerosene Coleman models that are not easy to come by at least here in the states are 234, 242k, 206, 231, 235. You can’t go wrong with a 249 in the smaller size and 237 or 639 for the full size lantern. These have fat generators that you can service them very easy.
When I got my latest X246B, there was still pressure in the tank after being left that way for a good few years.!
All of them! I'll echo Pancho on the 24(x) tho and if I was wanting something for use on my boat I would go 249 or convert a 242 for kero use. I like the big singles and have them in kero as well, but amber globes for the 24(x) are easier to come by for keeping the bitey bugs away!
The 339 is a medium sized lantern that I forgot to mention here and is found in UK very often. Take a look at it thanks for refreshing my memory @JEFF JOHNSON
Yes, it's a handy size and this link shows a topic which may be of interest. Pancho Converted Coleman 220-F.
