I could buy this Coleman 236 2 weeks ago after a post on Facebook where I was asking for pressure lamps second hand. I could buy 3 lamps..one was this Colman 236 Made in the USA. ( not Canada). The text only gasoline is printed in English , Spanish and French...hmmm special. The turning knob is a big one , I have found this same one in a part shop online so it could be original but I do not know that for sure.. It is a big globe , original and intact so..bought it for euro , not bad I gues.. I took the lamp apart and cleaned all teh bits and parts..I will soon light the lamp up..need to go to the shop for a can of Aspen 4 gasoline fuel..
Tony , I think there is maybe a stamp at the bottom but it is covered in rustpaint by the previous owner...maybe if I can remove that paint with crae I will find some numer or so..
Yes… you should find it there, although the “Coleman Book” does have an example of an undated US-made Coleman 236. US production started ~ 1941 with that style of Coleman logo on the tank. The US 236s are not as common as the Canadian 236s. The control wheel is not Coleman. Cheers Tony
Hi Tony , I thought that the control wheel was not ok...it seems also big...I am gonna try to find a correct one..I' gonna think to strip the paint off the bottom of the tank..Hope there is a number..I"m gonna have to be carefull not to remove the number with the paint..
I think, if there is a number at all, the number should be stamped, not printed, on the base of the tank. Terrence Marsh’s site says the Wichita 236s weren’t dated. CORRECTION: It’s the model number that’s stamped on the base of the tank. NOT the date. So your lantern will be undated. No need to remove the paint and sorry for the misinformation. @Tony Press Hi Tony...I carefull sanded the bottom further..there was indeed some more rust but no nr came thru..I looked up further and discovered what you said..there was a production around 1940/1941 foe the Major 236 Made in USA. They are collectible is what I read and in some forums there was a discution if they did exist or not ..they do So this one is a good one in my collection. I sanded the botom further till the rust was gone and then I gave it a anti rust treatment with dr galva to blue/blackend the metal. After that a coat of clear antirust / primer to preserve the bottom. The lamp I bought close from here where I live. The daughter sold this..it was from her father who passed away a time ago. He went fishing on salty water with this lamp so therefor the bottom was coroded and coverd in some red paint. So yes , this lamp has a history..I hope to light the lamp up by the weekend..after that she will get a nice place among the others oooo I now just read your other comment Ooo and thank you Tony for all of your info.
