What do you guys use to clean off all the black stuff from the sheet metal parts inside the globe area of these old lanterns? All the hard parts not sheet metal I am sure I can probably figure out easy enough.

Suggestions appreciated. I have restored a lot of stuff, but this will be my first go at an old lantern.

I use heated citric acid in my ultrasonic cleaner for non-nickle plated parts, as the acid can remove the nickle if it is thin. I use lye on any nickle plated parts.

Cilet bang or oven cleaner will shift the heavier deposits.
