For this project, as outlined HERE, a collection of parts from different lamps - brown-painted (originally) tank and globe cage/collar, but with a navy blue enamelled cap. Oh, and a Bialaddin control knob I’ve just noticed. I’ll be painting the tank and collar, though I’m yet to decide what colour. Brown with that navy blue cap doesn’t appeal, but the rarer cream finish would be ‘correct’ with that cap apparently. I’m undecided. What I’m resolved on doing however is to replace the ‘solid’ collar with a ‘slotted’ one, the appearance of which I prefer. The one I have is made of steel, including the four rods supporting the upper ring on which the hood mounts. I want those rods to be polished brass, not painted. Project underway, the riveted rod ends ground off. To be continued … John
Progress, having had a bit of a wait for materials. Specifically, the riveted construction required brass rod having a short length at each end reduced in diameter to form the ‘rivet’, an easy task for a lathe, which I don’t have. An alternative was to have a 3mm diameter rod (the diameter required for rivetting) enclosed by 5mm diameter tubing with a thicker than usual 1mm wall thickness. Tubing of that size was unavailable from UK online sources, so came from China. I silbrazed a brass washer on one end of each rod, leaving me with rivetting to do only on the one end. Ready to rivet! - once the paint’s hardened some more. The navy blue colour followed a decision arrived at in THIS post.
