A recent restore. I've been after one of these for a couple years after fettling one for a friend. When this one popped up nearby for cheap, albeit in rough shape, I had to own it. Spent the better part of the day filling and sanding bondo and then painting. But it was worth it in the end. Not perfect, but fits right in here at the patina factory I'm running I will post the before photos in the next post
Very nice job on that lantern! My paperwork shows only the 115 with a green hood and nickel tank, not the black version. Cheers Tony
I am not certain the two black lanterns 110 and 115 are the correct model numbers. In basic form they are variations of 110 & 115 for sure but in black with round holes instead of slots are clearly different. We have no paper showing any Lind-O-Lite lanterns in black but I had to list them somewhere so they are in the PLC as variations of 110 and 115. As ever we await more evidence. ::Neil::
Hi Toby, This is a beautiful lantern. Could you please explain exactly how and with what you removed the dents? I'm just trying to soft solder and polish similar stuff and it's not going well... I wish I could do it just like you did. Respect for that restoration All the best, Piotrek
Thank you all for the kind words @Piotrek I just used bondo like most auto body shops would use. Some of the dents were large enough that they really should've been pushed out some but the small bungs in the fount made that a difficult task, so I just filled them. This is fine on a painted fount, but if you're looking to nickel plate you would need a material that would take the plating like your solder. It's been years since I've done any lead filling, but I know it was an art to do it and make it look good.
Thanks a lot @Toby Garner. I thought that it is just me and my first soldering experiments that sucks so much Anyway, that lamp has plenty of character and looks special IMHO. Maybe because, where I live, I am mostly surrounded by Petromax style examples and just envy these American variety of hoods and colours... Piotrek
@Piotrek For lead wiping dents the type of solder used makes a difference, 30/70 (tin/lead) solder is recommended
Thank you! Im currently fettling my own and these ate obviously dry. Cant wait to get her done and lit!
