More on this later and i promise i'll post pics......but i could not wait to put a new seal in an old, circa 1947 Coleman 168 K fill cap. Are there special curse-words i should be mumbling as i pick at the petrified gasket? Some incantation to be applied to the black, crispy but fully adhered rubber? Or is it just patience and a very narrow chisel? Thanks, Piper
Acted on that good advice and found that a combination of dental picks, a purfling chisel, curse words saved out from a plumbing job at home and some "OOPS" brand solvent did the trick. More as it develops. Thanks, Piper
The easy way here is to tell yourself you want to have a nice polished brass filler cap. Then it is simple. Just apply a blow torch until the old rubber is burnt off then quench. A little polish, a new rubber and you are good to go. ::Neil::
I considered the blowtorch idea but didn't want to cobble up a spring i could not see inside the valve. Many of life's most challenging situations are caused by unseen springs and females. piper
New gasket. Pulled the generator and nipple, flushed everything in spirit and blew it all out and reassembled the lot. Tied on new mantles and pumped it up........lit, waited, failure. Tried again......more pumping (?).....lit , waited......failure. No more pumping, three squirts of spirit as before......lit, waited........this time my left brain beat my right to the finish line, I ROTATED THE PRICKER DOWN.......AND OFF WE WENT!! Voila! Feeble light for 2-3 minutes, rotate 2x more and ZOWIE, real light!!
