    Hi Guys

Lamp restore I started some time ago is going really well. Some photos of the original, and the progress so far. Its also working again now. The tank is pretty much done now but interested in your thoughts/experience on the hood. Being that its a little rusty it seems to be steel rather than brass, and its also enameled rather than painted. I'd love to get it re-enameled but struggling to find anyone in AUS. Is it possible to strip it back to bare metal? or repaint it?

Also anyone got any idea what year this model would be? Or rough decade?

    On the paint.

I am yet to find a gloss paint that can withstand the constant high temperatures of Tilley, Bi-Aladdin and most pressure lamps.

The best paints I’ve found are flat black pot-belly stove paints.

Therefore I usually clean the enamelled hood, and if required paint the very rusty bits with the stove paint.

I don’t know anyone in Australia that does enamelling, but you could look around for a ceramic artist.

TW Sands used to have reproduction hoods for Kayen lanterns enamelled, and I’ll ask Bernie, but I expect a “one off” would be expensive.

There’s a member of this forum in the UK that specialises in re-enamelling lamp hoods.

    Cheers

    Tony
