Hi ya, this forum is a wonderful resource. After my father passed away and I was cleaning out his stuff, I for reasons unknown decided to throw away his rusty old tilley lamp, once some time had passed I realized that rusty old piece of junk had been all that remained of my childhood spent camping, night fishing of the wharf and hours upon hours netting and spearing flounder with my dad. I managed to find a replacement X246B in good condition but the pump washer was hard as rock. A bit of oil worked into the pump washer got that working and the a test light resulted in kerosene dripping out of the on/off knob a bit of a search on here and packed the gland seal with ptfe tape. Now she is running beautifully , I have a replacement pump washer that's soaking in some oil and will be fitted once it's soft enough. Not sure if my dad's tilley was a X246B it looks the same but I remember his Tilley lantern as being a bit larger but that could be a trick of memory, Any it's nice sitting here, with that familiar hiss and warmth.
Welcome, @Fester. A nice thought for father. Have a look at the different Tilley’s here and you might get a memory back of the exact model your dad had. Cheers Tony
Welcome. Your lantern is burning brightly but I notice the insect shield is upside down, not that it affects the brightness but interferes with the correct lighting procedure. From the instructions: To assemble the storm lantern . . . 5) Fit small insect shield on to vapouriser with rim facing downwards . . . and from Lighting instructions: 4) (after having soaked the preheater torch in methylated spirits) . . . and then clip it to vapouriser below the glass globe. Light the torch. If using an insect shield, press it down away from glass, to allow entry of torch cup. 7)Remove torch and when cool replace in methylated (alcohol) bottle.
