Yes, several firms sold system lighting / hollow wire lighting, for example, Wells marketed HWL., as did Kitson and Tilley.
Ah thanks. Sorry for the one line question, but I double-posted the other thread, so thought I'd make use of the spare. I've been looking about but yet to see one on eBay. Are the sought-after? Do they come up occasionally? Any way to obtain new hollow wire? or something compatible? Anyone ever made them out of pressure lamp parts? Also curious about the extent of what was offered with this tech. And how late. Not just in the UK. It would appear you could supply lights, cooker and absorption based refrigerator with this tech if you wanted to. Was this ever an RV thing too? thanks
There is relevant information in the library, but it is only open to subscribers. Some collectors do rig systems and system lighting also turns up in the USA., and in Australia. System lighting was offered for houses and factories and shops etc., and stoves could certainly be hooked up to it. Carbide system lighting was also available. RV?
You can substitute modern copper, brass or soft alloy fuel, oil or brake fluid tubing for old hollow wire, but getting the right outside diameter for direct fitting is a test at times. Much old hollow wire system lighting works on lower pressure than stand alone pressure lighting, so knowing thoroughly how your system works is important for both effectiveness and safety. Gloria and Nagel Chase are two old US companies that also sold into Australia. Tony
@mR_Slug probably more chance of finding H/W stuff abroad? Our early R/Vs were mostly caravans and they seem to have favoured bottled gas? Early trains had different systems depending on which company but some used Acetylene as Jeff has said
We have a lot of hollow wire fixtures here in the States. Sadly many are missing key parts to make them work. I have around 30 fixtures and run them regularly.
