My daughter gifted me a Coleman 228F Big Hat. It came in the large red wooden box with an aluminum funnel in original box. Dated 11/67. It came from an estate sale and looked loved but neglected. The filler cap doesn’t seal; pump didn’t work and only air came out of the font—no fuel. Everything is stuck on! The font is in great shape. i began the disassembly but am currently on the gas tip cleaner assembly—it’s stuck!! I’ve tried lube, heat and then damaged it with an adjustable spanner. I used a plastic lid cut out to protect the font. So tomorrow I will modify a socket so it will grip the assembly and, hopefully remove it.
Kevin, do as you wish, however removing the tip cleaning lever is seldom required unless it's leaking. if it's seized use heat to try and break it free. The same with the valve stem. As for removing the valve from the fount perhaps see if air passes through the generator before you go through the trouble? And if you must remove the valve the CCF has a tutorial using an adjustable wrench clamped in a bench vise to remove the valve from the fount. It's quite simple. Good luck-Tom
Many thanks Tom. I found the fuel and air tube valve stuck closed, but i made some mistakes getting to it. I damaged the tip cleaner valve and the check valve. But im clawing back!! i ordered a properly designed tip cleaner valve removal tool with a stud nut to protect against future repeat! fortunately I also found a replacement valve at OCP. i watched a video with Frank at Old Town saying he uses a screwdriver to remove the check valve. Im not going to do it that way again. I should have sprayed carb cleaner on it instead of oil. Frank also showed how to remove a broken/stripped check valve with a #4 screw extractor—now that worked!! I attached a picture of the extractor driven with a reversed socket attached to a breaker handle. But i also ordered the check valve removal tool! now I’ve got all the parts in carb cleaner, except the valve bodies. The fuel valve packing was cracked.
Rebuild is complete! I have been reading other posts here. I ordered parts from OCP, purchased tools for the tip cleaner assembly and check valve. I repacked four old generators with bronze wool—I must’ve gotten better at it by the end of the night because the last two work and first two are too restrictive. I also built a lamp vise with plywood leftover from my table saw table replacement project. Welp here it is—burns so nice and bright. Man this lamp is a beauty
