Tilley FL6 Leaking issue

Good Evening,

While using my FL6 I noticed it was leaking fuel down the vaporizing tube. Any ideas on what I should check?

I have a new seal kit coming.

 

Well I think I figure it out. I had an issue with a mantle blocking some of the vaporizing holes. I also appear to have a leak from the gasket immediately after the control clock.

Are there replacement mantles available?

Good that you have picked up on the leaks on your FL6 lantern.

Some pertinent reading, relating to the dangers of leaking fuel in floodlights. Not to scare you but to emphasize the possible danger of leaks.

Thank you! I do have supplies on order from Fettlebox. As soon as we saw the drips we shut everything down.

It appears to be seal immediately after the control cock, but I am replacing all seals on the light to be safe.

 

Replacement mantles are available here:
Tilley lamp spares The "correct" mantle is part 191 but you can save a little money by using 164Pro which you tie top and bottom yourself. Do not be tempted to try a standard 164X mantle because as can be seen in the following image, the FL6 burner body is narrower than a standard Tilley burner and a 164X mantle will just fall off.

 

Thanks everyone. I have new seals and about a dozen mantles on the way from England. Is it terribly difficult to rebuild the control cock?

 

You don’t actually rebuild all the control cock.

The control cock has only a few parts that can be disassembled:

• the lower brass gauze filter casing;
• the valve inside the brass gauze filter casing, along with its washer and spring;
• the control cock washer;
• the black Tilley knob (not the shaft!);
• the packing box that is over the shaft; and
• the washer(s) inside the packing box.

There are parts diagrams in the Reference Gallery; and plenty of posts here about doing that job.

That’s a great cutaway diagram

the black knob pulls off the shaft and there is a tiny spring steel sleeve which usually sits inside the knob to hold it in place so watch it doesn’t fall out

 

If your pip is a single piece, as in the photo and as Part 555, and is hard (so it won’t seal, it is best to replace it with the older brass pip holder and flat washer.
