I have a cast iron type R1 burner that I just cannot get to run right. Wondering if anyone else has had the problem! back story: It's been apart, it is fully clean, I can't see any cracks or damage. The burner holes are at 0.109" which is slightly enlarged, but less than other functional burners i have in use. The "seat" that sits on the vapouriser is good and has been touched in for a good "seal". It has been tried on numerous vapourisers that work well on other lamps/heaters/burners. It has been tried with different mantles. The issue is that after 10 - 15 minutes, after running fine, starts to separate the flames from the burner, also at this point the lower brass parts starts to glow red hot as though it may be back burning. Turn it off for 30 - 60 seconds and relight with a match after it has cooled off a little, and burns fine again! Threaded parts have been checked and tightened whilst still hot, have been apart and been sealed. No matter what combination of usually useful fettling and swapping of parts/combinations, the common denominator is that for some reason this burner is just no good! Hoping someone else has had this issue and aye have found the cause as its now driving me mad!
‘Lifting off’ of flames from a burner has been, for me, a result of fuel starvation where the vapourised fuel and air mixture has become too lean to project flames outside the burner outlets but may well continue to burn within the burner. If repeated pricking doesn’t resolve it (and I suppose changing vapourisers may be the equivalent) I’d be thinking of partial blockage of the fuel pickup tube in the valve. Inspection and clearing of the pickup tube and valve in conjuction with a thorough flushing of the tank and replenishing with filtered fuel may resolve it if that’s the case.
Unfortunately I've tried on various vaporisers including a brand new high quality basecamp one. Just to prove the point re: Fuel pickup/valve etc I have used 3 different known working lamp bases, and each combination has been tested with a lamp burner also, and all combinations have been fine until this burner is used. My best guess is that there must be a crack in the cast iron part that opens up when hot, but wanted to see if anyone else had had a similar issue!
Hi I'm actually having a similar problem with an R1 burner. Lights ok, runs fine for 10 to 15 minutes and then just seems to go out. Fuel vapour is still coming out but it won't seem to light again until I let it completely cool. Strange thing is that even when I let the pressure off i see fuel vapour come out for a good few minutes. I'm not getting the glowing burner though, it just goes out. BTW this is my first radiator, but everytime I've seen a red hot burner with lamps its been because the burner is somehow out of shape i.e. gappy, and air is coming in somewhere else causing the burning inside the burner as Presscall says. I'd be shopping around for a new burner. And think I might do the same myself. Not that easy to find over here though.
U can pressurerise it, and then put it under water in a bucket of some sort, if you see it bubble, then U need to solve that,
