Hi All I've picked up three Handi lanterns, lovely little lanterns but so far two have faulty NRVs. I've replaced these before and had some Radius types which I use for my Aladins - Which don't fit the thread. So can anyone suggest an NRV which does fit? Why can't I just refurbish the existing NRV? Well thats a saga which seems quite common with Handi's its been an absolute battle to get the thing out. The first one stripped using my NRV tool and after much trying, heating, penetrating oil, swearing I got to the point there was so little left I had to desolder and remove the pump tube. I can use a tap on this to fit a different NRV, but i've never soldered before so have concerns about how cleanly I can put this back together, so would prefer not to get to this point again. The second one is also stripping when I try to remove it so I haven't tried very hard at all for now. So any tips on getting the NRV's out of these things? I've removed plenty of stuck NRVs before but they've never been this hard. I've tried light taps with a hammer, filling the fount with boiling water to try and heat the inside, three different NRV tools. Thanks
G’day @AndrewA Handi NRV’s can be hard to get out. Your application of penetrating oil and hot water is a good start. I have found a locking NRV tool helps considerably. The idea is to stop the tool lifting off the head. There are some very good ones shown on CPL. This is mine. Rather crude but effective. You need to find a spare pump cap (or make one) that will fit the Handi. Basically you adjust the lower nut until the tool is locked in place when the cap is screwed on. Note: you can't see it, the head threaded and fixed with a cell lock pin. @Sedgman posted using an impact driver on a particularly stubborn NRV. Used in conjunction with a locking tool I believe it would be very effective, but I haven’t tried it.
Ahh ok that's helpful, have seen something similar around but I wasn't sure how to use, so using the pump cap as a brace seems like it might be the bit i was missing. Whats a cell lock pin? thats new to me, and google seems to think its do to with my phone
