Hi guys and girls, I have acquired a Petromax 834 lamp that i will soon start work on and have a couple of queries if anyone can help out. 1. Any good parts suppliers for the pendant type lamps? I've found a few sources for the glass in Europe but they don't seem to sell any other parts. Similarly are the jets the same as the common PX type? 2. I've read conflicting things about what burner nozzles will fit and whether adaptors/cups are required etc. (Excuse the fact I'm not quite up on PX terminology yet!) If anyone has replaced theirs it would be good to know what they used. 3. Can anyone recommend a company they have used for stove enamelling and maybe give some ideas of what they may have paid for jobs? I also have a couple of Sugg gas lamps to enamel at some point so it might be worth doing the 3 lamps as a batch if it won't break the bank. 4. This lamp is missing its preheating cup, would anyone have a spare they'd mind selling? Unsurprisingly I haven't managed to find anything on the Internet yet! Thanks all!
Another interesting one, the vapouriser is marked "petroleum" is this a red herring? Were petroleum conversions ever available?
I am not an expert for "Donut"-lamps but I can answer some of your questions: ad1: none. There are no dealers for such parts. You will have to make your own spare parts of buy a parts donor on ebay. Ask John Moncrieff Ltd. for a quote for glass first. ad2. your lamp seems to miss the gas chamber which more or less is a sleeve with different threads to hold the burner. ad3. Companies do not like to do this kind of work. They like large scale jobs doing 1000 washing machine housings a day. Your lamp will be a difficult job to do: clean the parts (bead-blast to remove all the remaining enamel), straighten out the metal parts, level uneven surfaces, store the parts so they won't rust until ready for enameling, coat them and bake the enamel. So: I can be done, yes, certainly. The Arts and Crafts (one-person-) business which did some jobs for me closed some years ago. ad4. pre-heating cups almost always are missing. Find a sheet metal craftsman to cut and hammer one from a sheet of steel or find one to machine one from a block of steel/brass whatever. Erik
@Sploosh33 Your Petromax 834 is a pre-war model; I can tell by the narrow,elongated mixing chamber.It is the same size as the onefound on Ditmar 200 and 300cp lamps; Spanish and Italian replicas of the Petromax 834 also used this size. I asked a Taiwanese dealer to have burners made for this size, and he is now offering them on eBay.de. Mr.Rosen,the owner of "Petroleumshop" ,occasionally offers blanks for pre-heating cups for the Petromax 834 , 835 and 868 models.Glass globes are rarely found on eBay or collectors. Instead of expensive enamel, you can also use black, heat- resistant stovepipe paint. However , before placing any orders, I recommand disassembling the lamp , performing a leak test on the tank , and cleaning the vaporizer.
Thanks for the responses gents! Eric: 2. I have the original gas chamber, but I see a conversion sleeve is available to take newer burner. 3. I have the same issues with electroplating but have mow found a great company to do small batches. Was hoping someone on here could personally recommend somewhere they had used. Wimve: Good shout on the ashtray although I think I have found someone willing to sell me an original, so fingers crossed! Reinhard: Yes it is a pre-war lamp, in remarkable condition really. I have got everything apart without any seized or snapped screws and the tank is in excellent condition inside and out! I did consider polishing it up and painting the insides as the enamel isn't horrendous. I have painted other lamps, but this one and my two Sugg gas lamps are a bit more special and i would love to have them back to fresh shiny enamel! Thank you for the info on the parts!
