Ho folks. With all this talk of stress cracks etc and not using acid/citric acid on the fount, what's your take on Nitromors paint stripper. I wakened up suddenly this morning thinking about a hot air gun! (What the........) No chemicals and slight benefits of annealing perhaps. Not sure but I don't think the solder would/should melt. The lamp I got really needs the paint off so I've got to do it. Many thanks Brian
Hi Brian, I have used Nitromors and it works well, and as it is now water based I do not think that it will have a detrimental effect on the brass. However, do not leave it on longer that necessary, and wash off well with warm soapy water. It usualy only takes two applications, with agitation from a stiff bristle brush between. Then; do not forget the pressure test! Best regards - Steve.
Brian, I have used Nitromors on Tilley tanks when the paint finish has been in poor condition. Certainly worked well enough but perhaps I left it on too long as I usually found that the brass was left with pinkish, coppery coloured marks. Don't have a polisher so perhaps that would have improved things?
Hi Brian i would be cautious with the heat gun my one does 650 degrees C so i think it would indeed melt the soft solder, i do use it to dry a tank after its been in safety pickle to remove muck and any silver solder flux its great for that but easy does it pete
I have used my heat gun for releasing solder joints so defiantly be careful if you are using it near any joints or seams.
Thanks for the help folks. The paint is almost blowing off in the wind! I can remove some of it with my thumb nail. I filled the tank with cold water and gave it a slight blast with the heat gun. Nothing serious like trying to blister the paint. Worked a treat. Not tried the base yet so might end up with the nitromors in the end. Thanks again
