Hello and good evening, My name is Colin and I'm in the wrong forum...

Seriously, I'm a Scout leader with a thing for burny stuff, and I have never had a paraffin lamp of my own until today!

This arrived in the post and I believe it to be a 50-54 X246 as it has only the sticker and no stampings. It's in a bit of a poor state, hardly fully working condition as described by the seller, but hey ho, bit of a clean up and some seals and it'll be lighting the way for another generation. :D

The original cover you see here is as holey as Big Si's socks, so I'll almost certainly replace it with a later black one, thhe only other major drag is that the glass has disintegrated during post. Not really surprising when it wasn't even wrapped, just left in the lamp and posted in a big box without protection.

Burny stuff is good and I remember being a Scout Leader. Got the badge for 15 years undiscovered crime as well. Not much to go wrong with these. most bits are available and it will clean up. The hood were always brown on that model but a black one will probably look better. ::Neil::

Hello Collin welcome aboard CPL,of the 246 246A 246B lanten's the 246 guardsman was the best.
With a new set of seals, which can be purchased from the fettle box or base camp, you will have your lantern up and running.
You may even need a new vapouriser,a shame the brown hood is rusted through, but a second hand black one in good condition, can easily be purchased on the bay.
The brown ones do appear on the bay but are usualy expensive.
Dont forget to add some pics of your guardsman when it has been fettled and working.
And if you have opr are interested in classic pressure stoves, have a look on the sister site classic pressure stoves

Hi Gunner, Big Si don't wear socks, I know cause I have seen him at all hours of the day! Nice lamp, easy to fettle and if Big Si can't sort you out with spare bits, just let me know. Welcome mate! - Steve.

    Hello there!

Don't make the Guardsman look too buff, it needs to show that it has had a full life up until now!

    Greetings from across the sea,

Thanks chaps, I already have a black hood with a mixer thing in it, I think I'll take the original one out and swap them over.

As for polishing, not likely, it's got the original paint finish, and all I need to sort out is the seals, glass, and clean up the frame. It's 60 years old for goodness sake, if I wanted a new one, I would have bought one.
