Hope it's O.K. to mention eBay item as it's already sold. A KL80 selling for £410.99 - has the world gone mad?
I've no doubt the seller knows what he's doing but my (personal) worry is stuff going abroad and going 'missing' etc.. Need to find out a bit more myself as they seem to fetch great money going outwith.
The KL80 is a great looking lamp, not that I expect to see very many for sale but I surely hope that 400+ pounds was a one time Ebay bidding frenzy. No worries Brian, if it makes it to my garage trust that it will be well taken care of.
I think its just typical ebay buyers going crazy over a lamp that has been polished to buggery. Someone recently bid £80 for a polished X246B.
Ebay does not reflect the true value of of many lamps what would i pay for a KL80 not sure i would even want one let alone pay that for it. I dont like the hidden bidders name that they use now many items are bid up by others with no intention of buying it once they have someone intrested you would not bid £198 for something if you really wanted to win it would you. pete
Dont suppose your offering small, but regular monthly payments, say over......5 years After all, Its not like you need the money
Sure, i'll take a £200 deposit. That leaves £210.99 outstanding, i'll knock of the 99p coz i'm nice like that. Then it's just 60 instalments of £3.50. How would you like to pay?
I saw an early cycle lamp, quite sweet but rather tatty sell for £1600 a week or so back... The whole eBay thing is rather odd, you'll see one lamp sell for ridiculous money and then an almost identical lamp fail to make £20. It all seems a bit of a lottery with no rational explanation.
E-Bay is no different to any other auction, it depends on who is there and bidding on the day. You get two or three keen bidders and it can go silly prices, yet another day no real interest. Steve.
So why do I always list stuff when the keen bidders are looking the other way - or standing back admiring the thing they've paid silly money for!
I stumbled on "sidthelamp" over on eBid.net, and he lists a lot of classic lamps for top dollar. Mostly thought, it looks like his volume is in replacement parts. I have no clue how well they move, but maybe some visible competition would be healthy for all concerned.
My friend who sold the KL80 makes sure his lamps are 100%..no dents, correct parts on them, new seals, shows them working and plenty of photos showing the details..he's built up a reputation for selling quality products...
i'm a regular ebayer and it allways surprises me what things go for,,,,,a little bit missing in the description and a lamp is sold for a fiver ,,,loads of photo's of polished lamps and the sky's the limit,,,,the current rush to sell a polished tilley is giving an old boy in norfolk a healthy addition to his pension by turning a tatty car boot lamp into a shiny 'collectors item' he can polish one a day and it keeps him busy in his shed and he's allways on the look out for cast offs,,,,,he's also fast enough to evade the workers of the local recycling centre after 'rescueing' a lamp from the scrap skip, ignore the shouts of oi and departing through the gates with the lamp safely under his arm...
The three sellers of polished lamps on eBay seem to be 'juliands', 676bill and deni_b87. I've bought the odd item (none polished!) from the last-named so I know who he is, but nothing from the former pair. At the rate I'm going with work, I may well be joining them in the not-too-distant...
Story of my eBay career as a seller too... I used to buy a lot of very expensive telescopes through eBay to review them and then resell almost always I sold at a loss, but of course nowhere near as big a loss as I would had I bought new. The biggest risk though was that I occasionally found one I really liked
Yes, you are right it has been painted. I have to agree with David in another post. This is truly crazy, when you can pick up a good one of these common lamps for around £30 a few hours polishing and you got £200 pounds worth of lamp.
Yeah, painted heat deflector - until recently that was all you could do with these. The rest of the lantern can be polished but they were always let down by the top. The original vitreous enamel came in one of two colours - a sort of yellow (Chicken Korma) or orange (Chicken Tikka Masala) Now you can get a brass repro heat deflector for a reasonable price from my oppo Longilily and make a decent job of it - if that's what floats your boat, obviously. I've neither the time nor the inclination...
Yes, saw an item go to end with no bids at starting bid of 20, then re listed with start of 18, and sold after several bids for 31.50!
David, I personally think the orange top is closer to a chicken Tarka ! I can hear some asking what's a Tarka like ? Well, It's like a tikka but a little otter Sorry I'll get my coat
