Cougar Model CG 5300 Austramax

This is a re branded Austramax under the name of "Cougar", I have heard about these lanterns mentioned in this forum. Anyway here are a coupe of picture's. I am unsure of their history and why there was a re-brand or the era. Any help would be fantastic.

I don't know why the Cougar name is used. We need a lead on that part.

As far as age goes, I would guess at sometime in the 70s. This is mainly based on the fact that the box for these had colour graphics and the handle and top are the 'new' style but the pump knob and pressure release screw are still metal.

Nils, I will contact Austramax today and see if I can find the Cougar history. I thought a Cougar was something completely different. Anyway interesting lantern, they even stamped them with a different model number to Austramax

 

Perhaps they were made for another company, a mail order company for instance? Jeff.

 

The Cougar Kerosene lantern range was marketed by a company in Australia called Michaelis Bayley which was delisted in 1967. This information came directly from Austramax.

 

Thanks for the information. 1967 is a lot earlier than I would have expected considering the printing on the box and the font used for the name.

Interesting the delisting information shown on this website shows the company delisted in 1967. Maybe it should read it commenced in 1967.

Well, as I read it, that clearly shows the company was delisted on 4th January 1984 - see bottom of the left-hand column.

Also, it was known as Associated Leathers until 7th December 1967 and from that date known as (i.e. commenced) Michaelis Bayley Ltd...

 

Phew, Thank god we sorted that out !!! I guess my warranty has expired.

 

The newspaper article states that they had an engineering division. That fits with a lamp that could have been used as a promotional item or the like. Between 67 and 84 also fits with my idea of when they were made. It would be good to know when Austramax introduced the various changes to parts, but from what I've heard there are no records kept.

 

From my understanding the Austramax " Cougar " was made to supplement the " Cougar " Range of Camping Equipment.

They all share the same Logo

CGE Australia marketed the "Cougar" range in the '90's The supplied mainly propane Camping Equipment.

In the 70's not to sure in they were around or not. I think it was some one else that CGE maybe took over.

All spec of course.

Michaelis Bayley was a distrubution House that supplied everything from A - Z, more or less a Sears Roebuck .
