I picked this lamp up from Tasmania and I would like to correctly identify. I believe it is either an AL8 or AL9 railway inspection lamp but looking at pictures on this site and in the Tilley book i'm not too sure. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Astro.
Looks like an R1 radiator attached to an AL8 stand to me but other, more informed members will put you right.
Any old labels on the tank (underneath)? It could be a Kayen (Tilley clone). See my post on the Fettle Forum. I picked mine up here in Tassie.
No Tony it's definitely a Tilley, Kayen's don't have a pressure indicator. It has a patent number on the outside bottom ring of the fount that is found on earlier Tilley's to my knowledge.
See this earlier discussion. It may help.... http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/2628 ... Of course, you are right about the pressure indicator...
Yes I have read that post before, but this lamp has a Tilley control cock and pump. It looks just like the picture of the post war AL8 on page 49 of the Tilley bible only it seems to have an earlier control cock.
Its an AL8 from the late 1930s. The number on the tank rim is not a patent it is the designs registry number 681681 which dates from about 1923 and would have been valid for 7 years with a further 7 year extension which takes them to 1937 ish. That number is only found on pre WW2 product. ::Neil::
Thanks Neil I was hoping that was the case. It's good to see that lamps like this do exist in Australia even though they are few and far between. Astro.
If it's not a trade secret, where did you get it from in Tassie? I can keep my eye out for stuff like this if you want...
Hobart region Tony, that would be great who knows I might be able to trade a Kayen or two as I have a few lying around. Astro.
