I asked at CCF forum and the conclusion was it was either a 242K or a 247. Dated 1936 and Made in Canada. Somebody has bodged an R55 generator onto it at some point which is a bit of a shame. The preheater tray is the type commonly found on the 242K but it doesn't have the lighting slit with the slide. Worth trying to restore do you think? See attachments for more photos.
Looks like someone has screwed a hex head bolt into where the jet needle control goes, if so the threads are damaged and the fuel control is junk. As I recall the 242K has a specific type of cast burner head, different from the 242A gasoline. Neil M. was looking for that era of fuel control wheel for a 242K though, maybe message him about it.
I suppose I could restore it with a valve assembly from a 200A and a 201 generator and I would be left with a spare R55 generator as a bonus Edit: Here's what the burner looks like:
That main control does look like the one from a 242K. It is unique to that model and I have been wanting one for years. Not a big deal as I have the rest of the lamp in pretty good condition. However it does confirm what this lantern was before it got customised. Great shame but I guess many years ago some user did what he had to in order to make his lamp live again. ::Neil::
Well someone on CCF has posted a picture of what they say is a 247 with the same style of control wheel so now I am confused I think you're right about it being a 242K as I read somewhere that the pricker control on this model was prone to snapping off and that would explain why it was fettled this way.
Well I don't always get it right and these lanterns are difficult because there seems to have been a change over period when 242K sort of morphed into 247. On balance I think that control shows it to be a 242K. Problem is the catalogues don't help much and then there is the problem of minor differences between Wichita and Toronto product. ::Neil::
Hi James, while checking some other models this afternoon I had a look for 1930's 247 parts. If you need any to get this one rebuilt I have some of each, bail, collar, fuel control etc. Send a mail if you need these. cheers, Ken
I removed the bolt and fitted a jet cleaner lever that I removed from a 200A valve assembly. In spite of the threads being damaged it seemed to screw in place okay. I also fitted a 201 generator. It seems to be running reasonably well, but the flame is a little yellow. The mantle I am using is too large for this lamp, which might have something to do with it.
