Here is my very well used example of this lantern, it still works well though.

I'm not sure of it's date of manufacture, on one side of the made in Canada part of the logo, there is the letter C, on the other side there are the numbers 3 and 8, Jeff.

Something wrong there. Model 249 was introduced in 1947 but your date stamp is third quarter of 1938. Had a tank change perhaps or maybe some smart guy has managed to switch collars on a couple of lamps. ::Neil::

Hello Neil, I think that a tank change is more likely, as this lantern has the aluminium meths trough, Jeff.

Jeff. As far as I can see that Alluminum meth cup is from model 242K or a very early 247 from around 1936-1937. I can't think of it being used on any other models. Mind you it is late and the mind kinda goes to sleep at this hour. Maybe some of our American friends can correct me here. Seems to me you have a hybrid there with quite a few parts from different models. Interesting though. ::Neil::

Nice find Jeff and earliest I've seen of the Canadian 249. The aluminum cup is normal for the early years of the model. The ones I've seen from that production era invariably come with the light green vent as yours has. Here's a listing of the lantern on page 16 in the 1941 No.43 Canada Coleman Service Manual. Another example of a Canadian lantern model produced well before the US counterpart.

Hello Ken, so you reckon that it's not a hybrid, that's good to know.

The lantern has seen a lot of use, but it still works well, Jeff.

Definitely not a hybrid Jeff, I've posted a photo of a couple of the same early style of several 249's that I have from late 30's early 40's. Here is some additional info on page 6 of this 1941 Coleman Canada Catalogue.

I didn't realize that these were a dual fuel model. I've often wondered why the 249 was developed in addition to the 242K / 247 kerosene series. The larger 249 generator gives more surface area for gasification and probably works better than the 247 in extreme cold.
