    hi there guys
could the wise one please help with some advice
my lamp start great after a good warmup but as soon as it runs for about 10mins and everything gets up some good temperature it starts flicker once in a while and later on it starts puffing out the occasional large yellow flame.
this is my first working lamp and i really like using it but now i cant use it for more than 20mins a night.
    thanks
    AJ

    Hi AJ,

this is a common problem with the 214 Coleman kerosene.

I have solved it by using another type of mantle that is a little bit longer and closer to the generator / vapouriser.

The reason for the flames is that the generator gets too cold after a short time to evaporate the paraffin / kerosene properly.

Unfortunately I cannot tell you a brand or the maker of the mantle but it is a u-shaped 250cp type.

I would suggest to compare the mantle that you used with some others and give the slightly larger one a try.

Yes sounds like the generator is running a little too cool. A mantle that sits closer to the generator will do the trick or you can try adding maybe 10% gasoline to the fuel. I have had this problem with quite a few lamps. Coleman 206 can be a problem but I have also had the same effect with Primus 1001 and others with that burner. ::Neil::

i will give the gasoline a try since this started after getting new fuel, maybe its poor quality.

    Hi AJ,

Were you always using a #11 mantle, even when you were having the initial problems?

The #11 is a 500 CP mantle which is too big for the 214. The original specification is for a 21A mantle.
    Have you tried a 21A?

If the 21A is not heating the generator enough and you are trying to get the mantle closer to the generator, try a "round" Petromax style mantle in the 250 to 350 CP range.

It may be the fuel as you're thinking, but if everything was working properly, I don't think you'd get optimum performance with a #11 on this lantern.

    Hi AJ,

I'm going to guess that your problem is the mantle is too big for this lantern.
If you can't find any 21A mantles locally, PM me if you'd like, and I can send you a package of Peerless 21A mantles to try.

ok,so after lots of asking around i got a hold of a guy who gave me a nondescript mantle to try.

but still the problem persists as you can see from the blackening.

thanks for the offer dan,i am in south africa, but i have family coming from the US of A in February.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread. But I too have the same problem and was hoping to hear what the solution was especially as I'm also in South Africa.

most likely a dirty generator ,
they come apart easily , if not heat and quench to get apart .

be careful of the pricker wire .

it could also be that the pricker wire is bent in the bottom of the jet

or the air tube has a cobweb or something in it

The generators on these need cleaning regularly. Mine will only go 3-5 founts, and will burn yellow.
