I have a friend that found one Petromax 829 super rapid in working condition for 45 bucks, I will be picking it up soon, one thing that struck me is that the lantern does not appear to have a preheater torch, I was wondering if it was due to it being a "budget edition" or if it was like that on that production run, it appears to have a spirits cup, I will soon figure out the manufacturing date, here are a couple of pictures....
Hi Weirdnerd, to the best of my knowledge, Rapids always have the pre-heating torch. That's what makes them Rapids after all! They also come with a spirit cup to give you both options. Maybe the torch was faulty and discarded. Then you should see the fitting for it being blanked off with a plug. If there is no plug nor torch, you have an early model. Any which way, they really work pretty well with spirit pre-heating (saves you a lot of pumping! ) and an earlier version has some added "antiquity" value . Best regards, Wim
No, it only means your friend has a model without rapid pre heater. These lamps where sold with and without rapid. That is under an other model no. So If there is no fixture on the tank: tanks are swapped. Or lamp frame is swapped.
Hi Wim, a lantern leaving the factory without the rapid pre-heater would surely not be sold as a Super Rapid? I cannot see clear enough what it says on the collar, but if there is no pre-heater and the collar says it is a Rapid then something is wrong...But, any which way, the torch is a nice but not really needed gimmick imho. I sometimes use it on my Pmaxes, but I also use spirits now and then. The Indian clone works perfect without torch. Best regards, (the other)Wim
I have a cropped picture, I had to do it due to size on the upload, I don't know much of the lantern but my friend told me they have used for many years like that...I will post more details on wednesday, when I pick it up.
