At the Primus meeting 2009, Birger Varemo brought this stand for KL80.
I found it very cute and was planning to make a replica or even better, find one for myself. Now the question is, is this an original Tilley item or something that a handy person has make himself. It is made of brass and looks very professional.
I have consult Neil but he has never seen one in any Tilley catalgue.
    So the question still remains....
It is a very convenient piece, KL 80:s are hopeless to use unless you dont have a hanger for it. And as there was a wood stand, why not one in brass?

Hello Bo, I have never seen a Tilley advert for this type of stand either!

I have seen wick lamps in this style of stand before, but I do not recall if I have seen these stands advertised.

This type of stand was used to hold fancy china bowls and they were also used as potted plant stands. Cheers from Jeff.

    Hi Bo !
These stands do exist ,over the years I reckon to seeing six at least. Trouble is they used to sell for a fiver now its more like £25 just for this tripod.
If Steve Wood is reading this I think he has one.The last antique fair I went to there was one up for grabs but with a glass font attached to oil lamp with a price tag of over a £100 pounds.
Home made definately not as rim some times shows same gold as KL80 tank.
    Happy new year Bo !

So you reckon these are the real deal than and made by Tilley? Mind you with 6 seen they can't be a home made job anyway. Could be some hardware dealer had some made up but more likely an accessory sold by Tilley. Interesting and I want one. ::Neil::

    Hi All ;)

Yes I have 2 of these, maybe 3, 5 1/2 inch so just right for Tilley but not sure if they where made for them.

From my point of view that does not really matter much. Whilst I have yet to see on in the flesh it seems more than enough are known for it to be a genuine Tilley accessory. Official or not may be a matter of debate but in the meantime it has to be counted as a correct piece of Tilley stuff and I will list it accordingly.

I know very well I am difficult to convince when something "New" turns up be it a lamp or some other related device. I always demand evidence and the best of that is always company paper. However I will also accept the existance of more than one or two as good evidence which is what we have here. So the balance of probability is leaning heavily towards proven here. ::Neil::

Weren't some of the wick lamp tanks the same size as the KL80? I thought wall brackets, frames, floorstands etc from the old wickies would fit the KL80?

Couldn't this be one of them?

Exactly what I was thinking, Ross...

I'd read somewhere that Tilley used the same sized tanks as earlier wickie-lamps so that people would be encouraged to replace their old lamps with the newer pressure types whilst still being able to use their older brackets, standards, hangers and so on.

Thank you all for the input. We don't have the evidence this is made by Tilley so from this discussion I would say we are quite sure it basicly was made for a wick lamp but also fits a KL80. Similar are find here in Sweden too and also other wall brackets but probably not the right size.
No matter, I find it attractive so why don't you just ship one of yours to Sweden, Steve?

Fred Tilley was a shrewd businessman, he knew that many folk had hangers & wall brackets & stands etc., for wick lamps.

So they would not be keen on buying others, hence the ML., tank with it's 2 rims, this lamp was sold as a conversion lamp and then folk had to buy Tilley spares, (mantles, vapourisers, globes, washers etc.,) so more trade for Tilley.

I will not be convinced that this stand was made by Tilley until I see the paperwork.

As I mentioned in my first post on this subject, I have seen these stands with fancy china bowls in them and also potted plants, Jeff

Yes if these were tilley they would have advertised them in a catalogue somewhere, yes they fit tilley but most likely oil lamp stands like most of you suggest

    Hi All ;)

Tilley sold the ML93/94 lamp which was the same tank and burner as fitted to their KL80 model by itself and classed it as a conversion lamp for older out of date wick lamps and was suitable for 5 ½ or 6 inch frames, but the Tilley frames are 5 ½ inch.

So could you put one of these tanks in any frame holder of 5 ½ or 6 inch in size and say it’s correct :?:

Yes still got it Pete, steel frame with thick brass ring in the top.

Two lacquer polished brass and one very dirty.

What wood are those made from? Tilley originals were made of English oak but these look darker. Good copies though and appear to have some age. Very nice. ::Neil::
