I've recently been talked into joining the above organisation. Did I do the right thing?

If you're interested in early lighting in general, then yes, it mainly has wick and gas lamp enthusiasts, but some Pressure fans like Neil and myself are members...

You have to be joking. The HLC is a very English type of organisation. We have an elected committee and a magazine. Oh yes and five meetings a year in three village halls. There are some delightfully misguided members who drool over wicky crap and a few guys who collect real lamps. They have actually paid for a web presence but after forking over the dosh to have a page or two piggy backed onto the Guild web site they could not find anyone to actually create the pages and get them on line. I brokered the deal for them and the Guild was quite happy to give them the space but said they would not do the work to design the pages so it was left to the HLC to find a web master. It has only been three years so maybe it will happen yet and I am just being impatient. ::Neil::

I'd prefer to think of them as enlightened....

The website sounds like a great little project for someone. I'd love to take on the job myself but unfortunately I haven't even had time to get my own site back up and running yet since the server move well over a month ago.

I assume that others would be able to provide the content and it would just be a matter of putting it in web format...

I believe at the time the idea was to have a static web page giving details of the club such as who we are and contact details for the officers Etc. It would need to include details of future meetings. In fact the subject has not been mentioned in any club meetings for a while now but I am not aware that the money was ever returned so I assume all that is needed is somebody with the skills and will to actually create it and talk to the Guild webmaster. I am just a member of the HLC but I am a director of the Guild so I can tell you that the Guild will certainly honour the obligation if we are asked again. ::Neil::

Out of interest, does Historic Lighting in the context of the club include early electric lighting or is it strictly non electric?

"Paraffin, petrol, manufactured gas, alcohol and other fuels" according to the Guild listing here so I guess that excludes electric.

Thanks for all the information. I'm interested in most forms of lighting, particularly gas and pressure but I also like candles and early electric lights. If a carbide lamp ever came my way I'd find that interesting, too!
