    Hi,

I have a problem with one part from Hasag Polar. I have no idea, what material it was made from. Maybe someone can help me. Oryginaly it was between two aluminium washers in upper part of lamp. It looks like made of paper or felt(?). I have to find replecement for it. I marked it with red in pics:

    Hello,

I have never seen it before but I guess it would be asbestos.
It would reduce the heat transfer a little.

    Thanks Wim,

if it was asbestos, I have to replace it with something else for sure :) Any idea what I can put there instead of it? It has to be compressible a little.

    cheers,

    Hi Michal
I know there is shapeable materials containing fibres in shops for chimneys for fireplaceses in homes and also kits for repairing exhaustpipes on cars included here firegum. Maybe you could use something here - you are no schoolboy in fixing things I know. :D

My latest Graetzin 915 has a similar one but a little bit thinner and I agree with Wim: it would reduce the heat transfer.

Why to change it? I guess that little amount of asbestos would not be danger as teh exposed surface is very little.

Do you want to be sure? Some years ago, working for a Canadian distillery, in Venezuela we painted the roof made out of asbestos to reduce the pollution as it was very expensive to change the roof. This was accepted by the environment authority and by the environmental managemente service of the company. So, paint it with a heat resistant varnish to assure the asbestos.

    Juan,

I need to replace it, becouse mine is just corrupted - it spent many years in wet conditions and it is rotten. I could probably get it together with some epoxy, but it doesn't make sense - that's why I'm looking for some replecement.

    cheers,

Not sure about this thing on your lamp never seen one if the original is past its best what about a pile of washers punched out the same size and stacked between the two aluminium washers then clamped up I am thinking of graphite card or car manifold gasket like used on exhausts maybe give you some ideas

Possibly the easiest option is to find a car engine gasket of the same thickness from a motor parts or repair centre and cut to shape. I use engine gasket for this purpose while I wait for new seals to arrive and they have been generally excellent.
