    Hi All,

Had this for several years now.... a " Norma "

    1365421377-Norma.JPG

..... and it has always been one that I couldn't find anything on. No one else seemed to know about it also.

Until an Ebay Item appeared with a picture of a Norma III spirit stove. c 1920's

A quick search of CCS revealed that " Norma " is synonymous with Gustav Barthel [ Germany ]

    Now Gloria Light Co [ of Australia ] were " Agents " for Barthel's products [ Hardware & Machinery May 6 1925 p 64 ]

So ....... could it be that Gloria Aust. included one of Gustav's Donuts to their range of Outdoor Lamps.

Or is it an Imported Barthel's Donut.

    All pure conjecture of course.

Unless someone has a Barthel's Catalogue circa 1925 - 30 on lighting to confirm.

    Colin

Welll it might be if Barthel had ever made lamps. I am not sure they did though. We know they made a small upright mantle magic lantern lamp based on a blow lamp tank but a Donut? Simple answer is I don't know but maybe? There is nothing in Golberg quite the same but the latest of this I have is about 1911 and styles changed of course so a later model may not be exact. The style is 20s or earlier for sure but there is no info to confirm that. It does have the look of these Hirschhorn lamps from around 1912 ish.

    Thanks Neil,

I guess it still remains a mystery.

The only reason I researched Barthel is that it has a plaque on it " Norma Lamp "

Another one for the " too hard box "

Reasonable assumption. Norma is Barthel so it seems likely the lamp is as well. So we can say with some certainty that your lamp is definitely maybe a Barthel. possibly? In fact why don't we take the bold step of saying it is and then wait to be contradicted. Can't imagine who by though. ::Neil::

    Hi Colin and Neil,

The Norma brand is connected to Barthel, but to my knowledge no Barthel lamp has surfaced so far. Could it be that Barthel incorporated a Norma branded lamp to make a complete line of products, by cooperation with some of the big German lamp producers at that time; Hugo Schneider, Hirschorn, Swintzer & Gräff and Eckel & Glinike.
Here is a “Clara” lamp from Hirschorn, which match most of the features on Colins lamp but with some minor design differences.

Barthel did make a lamp in several variations. Their Mitre brand is a small upright mantle microscope or magic lantern lamp. Not sure if there is one in the galleries here.I will have a look and if not then I will post images of the one I have. ::Neil::
