Hello everyone, I am new here, just a few days ago I was cleaning out my grandfathers shed and found these lamps, most of them are tilly's there is a mix of different types and i would like to see how many i can restore. are there any user manuals still arround that i could download? 90% of these lamps and radiators have never been used so they would be new origional stock.
Theres some nice lamps there, the highlight being the Tilley 5oocp donut, the wall lamp looks strange with blue paint on it, all of them are restorable and being Tilleys should be straight forward....
Hi Beanz, Welcome to the forum, if you need help restoring any of those NOS Tilley items feel free to send them to me. Could we have some bigger pictures to please, as Paul said you've got some nice lamps there but I'd like to see them all a bit better.
If you go to the Basecamp website (link on the homepage of this CPL site) you will find illustrations for the components of your X246s and some other information. Go to the Lamp Reference Library here at CPL for copies of parts guides for many other lamps models.
Hello and welcome aboard! If you sort out what's there and take better photos and post them here, then we shall be able to give more advice, Jeff.
that is a super first post! i like the first one and i don't know what model it is but you have sure come to the right place to find out all about all of them. aparently you can't find out from your grandfather but restoring them from where he left off seems to be a nobel task.
I wonder if they were reusing parts when they made it look like an hot blast hurricane lamp? As far as I can tell the "air ducts" are sealed at the end and serve no purpose so they could have used a far simpler frame... I'm actually more curious about the lamp directly below.
thank you all for the input, there are too many to make one large post so i will start with the top one and make a new post each week with something new. my Grandfather had a shop, he used to sell all kindes of things, he was a well educated man and was a baker by trade but also fixed tv's and radios in the good old days of the valve. those of you old enough will know what i mean! and he recharged accumulators of which i think i have one in mint condition.
Ohh my...i'm pretty sure you have a smaller diameter Tilley donut lamp there, now that is the highlight so far...it's turning out to be a real Aladdins cave...
Well, I wouldn't say that. The highlight this far is the carbide lamp, even if the type isn't rare. The others just look like the usual Tilley stuff to me. Beanz, I merged all your topics into the original one. Better to keep it together.
Hello and welcome. Are they still alive? Why did they have a lot of lamps and lanterns? Did they collect or they did use them? Nice carbide lantern!
Seperate them you will find that they breed if you are not very carefull,I would love to have had a start like that to my collection. For your health be "very" carefull of any dust that could have come from the Radiator mantles as it is Asbestous I would spray mantles with 10-1 water/Pva glue and bag them. Graham,
All i can say is you lucky sod Is that two donut lamps , several wall lamps & how many R1's & early models too I bet Ross is gearing up in the fettle box to cope with all the spares your going to need to get that lot up & running 8) Best regards Stu
HeHeHe! my granddad's shed is at the bottom of the garden...lol as for spares there is a whole draw full of spares, what i could do with is an instruction manual. yes there are 2 doughnut tanks and 1 is smaller that the other, there is at least 1 hospital lamp and i think i saw the transit box for it somewhere full of nuts and bolts...Pop didnt throw anything away.
I have to agree with Paul, that one donut does look like the 10". Perhaps you could run the tape across it just to confirm, if so I think that is where you should start restoring. Just note, in the one photo with all the spares (the one with all the meths jars and two lamp tanks) at the front there is a chrome pump. That needs to go in the chrome table lamp on the shelf next to the radiators in the photo in the above post. Hopefully you'll come across the chrome gallery in there to complete it. Christer Said: "Well, I wouldn't say that. The highlight this far is the carbide lamp, even if the type isn't rare. The others just look like the usual Tilley stuff to me." No no no I don't accept that.
If you don't want those old Primus stoves / spares give me a shout as they'll just be in your way & i have a warm workshop waiting for them here ..... & there's a KL fount too Stu
Looks like some rare stuff in there which wants preservation at least. 10" Do nut lamps are rare and I see you have a globe on the OL51 which is another hard piece to find. You need to have a trawl through the Tilley gallery posts and see what you have and then you need instructions and such. You have lamps there that a lot of collectors are lusting after. PM me with your email address and I will bung you a PDF with most of what you will need in the way of paperwork. ::Neil::
Beanz, I can sense all these male CPL members salivating over your amazing collection! Only thing I'm concerned about is the globe on the larger donut and I would advise you to get it off and stow it away safely.
Beanz, I recommend you do take up Mackburners offer. Any one of us reading this forum will vouch for his integrity and knowledge.
yes i have sent a pm. thank you all again for your comments and advice. i will measure the doughnit tanks and let you know the size when i let the cat out of the shed, she likesnit in there its warm.
the doughnut tanks measure 10 inch and 12 inch. the glass has now been removed and put out of harms way.
If it has been stored in a sealed can then it should be okay, when I fill a lamp I use a filler which has a mesh and that catches any muck. I have often obtained lamps etc., which still have paraffin in them and I pour it into a clear container and leave it for a week or two, so that any muck which is in the fuel can settle to the bottom of the container. It's usually okay to reuse in a lamp, but it's also handy for cleaning paint brushes etc.,Jeff.
It probably has but if it's stored in a suitable container it's a matter of years rather than months... In wick lamps the main issue is that it evaporates from the wick and can clog the wick up with a waxy deposit if it dries out in that way. I've seen it recommended that you keep them half full and replace it every few months if not in use, but as all mine are used at least once every couple of weeks I just keep them topped up.
