Anyone going to be at Newark that has a Tilley R1A Radiator please bring it and be prepared to light it. I have in mind a small experiment  to test the best positioning of the burner intake tube. Anyway, it's a good excuse to light  Steve.

I said R1A' because that is all I have :-& :-& . Also, the experiment must be based on the same models, to ensure consistency of at least the starting point. However  , there is no reason why older models cannot be included, but they will be in a parallel experiment as they are not the same design of burner (I think  ) Oh s**t! what have I started here   . Steve.

    Hi David !
You must be close to that nuclear power station that is not for generating electricity all the time ! Its got some other hidden agenda I think !
Why not chuck alot of the crap in your car and bring it south .
Pile it high and sell it cheap !
Whats left over you can store in Janet's shed on the way back north !
    Mick

I'll have three R1's of different ages that you can try Steve, but I have to say that I would think the condition of the burners is going to impact the results. Maybe not, just a thought. See you there. :D

Anyone got an IR heat measuring device they could bring? It would be a bit more scientific than the Mk1 eyeball  - Steve

I'd have thought the 'MkI pair of cold hands' would have been a more appropriate instrument for measuring IR radiation at Newark, given the appalling weather there last year.

And as we all know, the MkI eyeball is actually for measuring light output!

I think but not sure but that heat measuring device could be called a thermometer....

    Hi Steve

    I can bring an IR device that's good for 500 degrees C and a thermocouple/meter that's good for 1200 degrees C if that's any help :?:

You'll need to devise some sort of frame that holds the thermocouple at a fixed distance... too close and you will get huge variation just from the shape of the mantle and indeed the flame. Too far and you will get other issues, not least differences in the focal point and reflectivity of reflector.

These things are never as straightforward as they first seem...

    David,

The Mk1 eyeball is pretty good at measuring the size and intesity of a burner flame. The IR device requested is to attempt to measure the temperature difference of the burner output at various air-intake positions. Anyway, it's all for a laugh  , but who knows :?: something useful may come from it [-o< , even if it's just a warming of the participants  . With your background, I feel that you may be the ideal person to supervise and record the experiment :!: . Are you up for that :?: We can discuss and plan a test regime when we get there between Sloe Gins :D/ :D/ - Steve

Sloe gins, yes; farting about with Tilley R1A radiators, not likely!

I did this as a 'thought experiment' years ago and reached various conclusions then which have been supported empirically ever since...

But David! Did you publish the results of your "thought process" and "Empirical data" :?: . Anyway, original research is always best challenged  so maybe there is some more fun to be had :D/ . But :!: No take part = no Sloe Gin  . See ya there. Steve.
