Does anyone beside me have to deal with deer to the point of having 8' tall electric fences to keep them out of an orchard? I spent the day putting up the corners for another fence, and I'll be adding the bracing wires tomorrow. Wednesday I pick up the line posts, and I hope to have it all complete (and electrified) by the end of June. The State has a policy of providing funds for fences if the deer cause agricultural damage, but there hasn't been any money in the pot for years. I'm just wondering what sort of indigenous pests the rest of you deal with, and how you deal with them.

That's actually a good idea. We put tin foil covered with peanut butter on a new electric fence to bait and train deer that the fence is hot. I'm going to recommend this to friends with a bear fence for their bee hives. The bears really mess things up, and something spicy behind the voltage may serve well.
Apart from wild pigeons stealing my chickens' food and hedgehogs feasting on the cats' food I have little problems in my garden! 'course there are the slimy snails to deal with, but these, once caught, are a welcome suplement to the chickens's menu Best regards, Wim
I think those may well be the chilis we came across in the Maldives... unbelievably hot, and I love spicy food. It's the only time I've found anything that was too hot for me.
