What's missing in this Tilley?

Hail to members of CPL, it's Captain Mike again with another dilemma to solve. A really nice, new version of the English pressure lantern just arrived in today's post, a Tilley. I can hardly believe it reached me from Bilston in the West Midlands in just three days...incredible 'Global Priority'. Now, on to my dilemma, it would appear as though there are three, small 'spacers', for lack of the correct nomenclature, that serve to make the burner fit into the vent correctly. They are not present and I need to take up this issue with the seller, the plonker that he is. I have sent along an image of the burner just as I received it, although now with a mantle on it. I could not control my desire to light it up. I hate having to go through getting more parts out of the UK again, but there is no other option for me. What are these spacers called and could I get them at Base Camp? Thank you from Captain Mike De Long in Hampton, Virginia. I have always wanted a nice Tilley, my prayers have been answered.

Hello Skipper Mike, that type of Tilley burner is held into the hood by the air pipes.

The odd looking air pipe needs a brass bush on the end of it and the bush is held in place with a brass split pin, which is fitted behind the bush through the small holes in the air pipe. Jeff.

That model from what I have seen needs a bush as sown but instad of a split pin uses a wire spring U with curves both sides fits around tube in groove.

Hail Jeff, Graham and all viewers. I thank you, Jeff for the response and the interesting photography. I now can see exactly what is needed. Jeff, thanks for your response to my post. I knew there had to be some way of the burner sitting into the vent. These Tilly's are marvelously simple to use. Their technology is well refined since they were first introduce, that is quite obvious. It is good to be learning from folks who know these lanterns so well. Hello Mike, Graham is correct  and I did not notice that  , but if you cannot obtain the proper spring, then just twist some wire around the pipe at the back of the bush so that the bush is held in place, but make sure that none of the wire is hanging down where it could damage the mantle.

Once the bush is held in place that will hold the burner in the hood.

I prefer the older style of Tilley burner, the air pipes were threaded and 3 nuts held the burner in place.

Sometimes I replace the modern air pipes with the older threaded ones and I shall add some photos which show the older burner soon, Jeff.

Hail CPL & Jeff in particular. Thank you for taking the time to share your incredible photography with me. I would much prefer to use that approach for my unit, but I want to be able to get the vent back on it again. I am also working on my Bialaddin 300X, too and am discovering that I should not take on more than one lantern at a time. Thank you, Captain Mike De Long in Hampton, Virginia.

OK, well I keep telling people I have "two dozen" Tilley X246Bs in my garage roof, without ever having counted them. In the event, that guesstimate proved remarkably accurate:-

...although there are about another half-dozen dotted around the house. I've no real idea where I got all these from and in the next few weeks most of them will be stripped for spare parts and then the rest being weighed in as scrap.

Anyway, just one of them had the air intake and spring clip that Mike needs:-

A bit out-of-focus but you get the idea. Incidentally, the ferrule is aluminium rather than brass as I'd thought - more cost-cutting by Tilley?

These will be on their way to Mike in the next couple of days...

I can definitely remember buying the chrome-topped ones (and an MIB one not shown).

As for the rest? - people just give me them, they come as part of other deals or whatever. It's a mystery... :?

Seems a shame to scrap them...

Some of the hoods look to be in better condition than mine. I'm sure if you took some of the better ones to Newark you would get some takers.

    :-s :? I'll have a pint of what you've obviously been drinking... ;)

The three matt chrome-topped ones are quite rare (though not hugely desirable) and can be kept intact for sale. The best parts from the rest will be kept for spares and/or re-use. Only the worst parts (dented or blown tanks, rusty frames and tops etc.) will be recycled.

I suppose I could polish-up the odd 1 or 2 and see how they go on eBay...

David - I know they are quite common but I rather like the bronze coloured one you have in the front row...

Hail to readers in CPL & David. I must admit to making a mistake when I sent you a message that I need the part for my Bialaddin rather than a Tilley. I was wrong again, nothing new about that. It is indeed a Tilley 246 that I need the part for. Hopefully the parts went out in the post before you got the message that I need a Bialaddin part. I need a stiff drink. Captain Mike De Long in Hampton, Virginia.
