Hello folks, I have a couple of queries to assist with fettling a couple of Tilley lamps, hopefully some of the seasoned fettlers can assist :) :-

AL15 - does anyone know the thread size used on the screws that hold the heat shield above the burner. It should be held on with four wing nuts but all I have are the brass screws.

SL61 - what is the best approach to re-seal the fuel pipe coming out of the tank where it originally used a lead washer for sealing ?

    Many thanks David

Tilley used Whitworth screws so they will be either 1/8 Whit or the BSF equivalent.

Make a new lead washer. You can use a rubber type but that can tear if the swan neck is rotated. A lead one will resist rotation and lock the tube in place better. This is why it is a lead seal. You can revive an old lead seal by adding a coil of solder wire in there. ::Neil::

No idea of the thread size because I just took my lamp around the local motor factor/hardware supplier and got four wing-nuts to fit the bolts.

Another lead washer? - haven't had that problem yet! Cut one from lead sheet, otherwise you could possibly try nitrile or Viton (which is what I'd try first...)

    Hope that helps...

Edit - crossed with Neil...

Thanks for the replies, thread size good to know, will see if I can find something suitable.

Solder tip a good one, will let you know how I get on and what 'washer option' I go with :)

    Regards Dave
