Hi All, I am fettling a Veritas 350 I picked up with a Tilley, from a "hard garbage collection". The Veritas has a broken Pricker rod, a broken pricker needle, the burner is incomplete and the pump leather disintegrated. Can you clever people please advise me on a. the thread type & size for the rod (I need to make a new one) b.the pricker needle size (I have been able to make one that fits through the hole in the jet) and c. if the burner had a Ceramic or wire gauze insert in it. Thanks Richard
Welcome to a fellow Aussie, re parts would ask in Trading post here or watch flea bay I have 2 will have a look tomorrow for you. Please don't buy all the lamps before I see them. Graham;;
Richard . Sands in Melbourne has spares for all types of lanterns near you .If you are just starting out lamp collecting have fun might see you on the hunt then as I live near you . Geelong lad lamp hunting I like . Bob .
No idea about the first two questions - sorry. The Veritas 350 has a brass burner nozzle with an inset metal gauze:- Hope that helps...
Sands is well worth the pilgrimage if you are in town in Melbourne, but while the web listing for them says they open at 9 I got there and found they didn't open until 10. You should ring and see whether they can source what you want. While on the subject of Sands, their Sydney partner Brandt Bros has closed their Sydney shop front. Welcome aboard.
Hi All, Thanks to everyone for their welcome messages etc. and replies. Also to David for his Pictures now I know what the burner should look like. Very helpful. Thanks Richard
Hi Richard hope this is useful, there is a difference in the lengths probably due to size of cam raiser blocks ( prick wire broken off in older model tip) Found what I think will make good 0.15mm pricker wire in 1 strand of 7 strand C/L model aircraft control cable. Does anyone know where to find a drill to make the hole for this. Graham;;
Hi Graham, Thanks for that info. I examined the end of the pricker wire holder with a strong magnifier. The steel wire is held in place in the brass by crimping the brass around it. The smallest drill bit I have is 1mm, I think I will be able to crimp it enough to hold the wire in place. I have obtained some Dental root canal files that have a very fine diameter, and have smoothed the files teeth off one of them by carefully rounding them off on a sharpening stone so that it now fits through the jet. Drill bits smaller than 1mm should be available from engineering supplies stores. P&N or Suttons here in Australia should have them. Although using something that fine would be an interesting exercise. Regards Richard
A better way is to take a piece of wire from a Tilley pricker and grind the end down to 0.006" with a Dremel to fit the jet and then grind a shouder to 1mm to fit the drill hole. You could rotate the wire in a lathe but you need something in excess of 10,000 rpm to achieve a decent cutting speed at these small diameters. Old Tilley wires are great for this because the steel is right for the job and they are readily available from worn out vaporisers. ::Neil::
Hello Neil -well, you're back then! How was Newark this year? I expect we'll be seeing some pics over the next few days.
Not from me you won't we were only there for four hours on Saturday and I took no pictures. Looked like a good do this year though with a lot of lamps on show. ::Neil::
TW Sands bought Brandt Bros years ago. T W Sands still has a presence in Sydney, Bernie travels up once a month to an Antique Centre in Rockdale. Colin
