Hello there! I just recently purchased this Optimus in great condition(all optimus parts even the nozzle and the nipple/pin) from an Antique Shop for $50 with the blue porcelain reflector. The tag is all worn out and I can barely distinguish 550/500 on the marking. No date stamp can be found on the fount, only the "OPTIMUS" "MADE IN SWEDEN" marks can be found. The globe has only the Optimus logo. Any guess how old is this lamp and possible value?
The lamp itself is probably from the early 1960s. It would have originally come with the filler cap shown in the frst three photos. The pressure guage filler cap was an accessory for the models with a quick starter. The shade is a modern Chinese one, probably from Anchor. Sorry but we don't do valuations on the forum. Values change all the time and vary depending on where you are. What can be bought for a couple of dollars in one country is a rarity in another. All I can say is that this lantern is not uncommon in Scandinavia.
Good observation on the filler cap!The cap with the guage is actually from an anchor used only for testing since the rubber seals from the original optimus cap became hard and brittle. It fired up instantly after cleaning the fount with some kerosene. The Foot valve assembly is off-centered from the fount and I am just waiting some lead and viton seals for part no 90 of a petromax hoping that it will fit. So I guess this is a keeper? You are partly correct New Petromax Lamps probably cost 100 Euros in you country while here in the Philippines you can buy them for 50 Euros. However, only meth heated models are available here, none with the rapid heater same for Sea Anchor Lamps.
I just finished hammering the lead washer and installed the generator assembly and is now facing 12o'clock on the fount. I guess I need to change the jet and the cleaning needle does petromax needles fit?
Looking at the light it is giving I can't see why you would need to change the jet and needle, but Petromax parts do fit.
